Hi Im looking for the best all mountain bike for arround the £3000 mark. I have been looking at the Orange Alpine 160 AM and Trek Fuel EX 9.8. I want to be able to go for cross country rides with the musses and also need something that will handle some downhill tracks with my mates. Any oppinions/info would be awesome!

Cheers!

The Trek is more XC bike than a AM one.
The Orange is a proper AM bike.

So it all comes to how much weight can you handle for XC rides.
How much max do you want the bike to weight?

3000 is a lot of green, yuo have a lot of choices at that price.

That fit your description and that I've ridden
    • Yeti 575
    • Intense 5.5/6.6 (or the new tracer)
    • Santacruz Nomad

    There's loads out there though
Everything in moderation ... except beer
Beer in moderation ... is a waste of beer

If riding an XC race bike is like touching the trail,
then riding a rigid singlespeed is like licking it
... or being punched by it, depending on the day

Yeah I know. the choice is overwhealming lol. Out of the three you listed wich would you prefer?

    Thanks
  • what about a trek remedy 9 or a commencal 6.1
I assume this is French petrol - be careful in reverse - the car will retreat rapidly at the least provocation.

Well imo the the Yeti 575, which is what I would have bought if I didnt own an Orange 5 AM or had a bigger bank balance.

    Charge Duster SS

jorbish. It would be a tough choice tbh.

On balance probably the Yeti race build. Mrs B has the enduro build and that's nice but I'm a fan of bolt through forks. Last year they had it specc'd with the 36 Talas, this year it seems to be the 140 float RLC. I suppose the Float is lighter than the 36 talas....

Mainly my choice would be based upon that fact that the yeti I believe to be the lightest frame (certanily feels the lightest to ride), the componentry is superb (CNT Monkeybars and thompson seatpost/stem on the base build  ) and I think is a whole bunch stronger than it looks.

I've also spent more time on the 575 (sneaking out on Mrs B's when she's not looking  )

    Hi I have found this http://www.jensonusa.com/store/product/ ... LUK&cc=GBP

Anyone had any experience with this store?

Also being 5ft10 which frame size would best suit?

    Thanks

I'm 5'10" and I would get a medium or a small depending on whether you prefer a smaller frame or not. Having ridden Mrs B's XS I'd go with a small ... but I like small(er) frames and the yetis come up a bit on the big side.

but really, that's a lot of money to drop on a bike you've never even sat on

can you not arrange a test ride or summat somewhere?

also; remember the Jenson price will not include VAT and probably not include shipping. Some US internet sellers refuse to sell into Europe (at least Nashbar refuses to ship to Belgium) I think this is due to the legal protections that Europeans have from internet sellers, or it could be because they think we're all laundering drug money :o

You're willing to spend 3k on a bike online? I hope this is after test riding a fair few and not just going off the opinions of people in cyberspace

lol. I would deffinatley go check one out first for sure. I was just looking arround for prices and this site seemed to be ALOT cheaper than others. Ill have to look about for a store here in wales that I can test one at. The two stores here in Swansea don seem to stock them :(

You really need to do some research.

Start in the reviews section of this site....

Opinions here are fine, but generally driven by what peeps would buy themselves given £3k.

As for where to buy them - there are several sites linked to this one (CRC, Wiggle etc).

Then, there's good old Google. Whack the bike / model of your choice in and hit search, then you can compare prices.

Before this, perhaps make a shortlist of features (carbon frame/brakes/suspension travel etc) so you can whittel the choices down....

Last of all, once you've decided, go and ride it. If you already ride, you may have a good idea of what consitutes a good bike for you.

If not, you maybe ought not to be popping £3k so freely. Spend less, get into the hobby/sport, then pay more if/when you decide it's time to upgrade.

Can anyone recommend any bikes from the 2 sites above? I can get to these shops from where i live to have a test on them. Cheers
  • I'd also recommend trying some bikes from Skyline Cycles at GC. After looking around all the shops in Swansea and surrounding areas I ended up going to Rocky Mountain in Lantrisant and bought my Remedy from them (helpful, friendly, knowledgeable staff, which is more than I got in a few shops around here!!) After riding plenty on the MBUK Demo day at GC.

I spent nearly 2k on mine and it took me months looking at/trying and deciding on a bike.

At 3k I would want to ride a hell of a lot of bikes before making a decision. Tredz and Wheelies are owned by the same company (I think) so sell similar stuff.

My vote would be a Remedy 9 if you want something more than an xc in your price range, I'm super impressed with my Remedy 7. (but that's my biased opinion!!)

Another option: Cube Fritz or Lapierre Spicy

Try a Remedy 8 they come in around 29.5 lbs for a medium
Same as the Orange 5 AM version I put a zero rise stem on mine
to counter act the lift of the fork from 140 to 160

Remedy 9 all the way, its well below 30lbs @ 28.2lbs and comes with an amazing spec 150 / 160 split fully adjustable travel and XTR and top end SRAM. Have had mine 3 months now, and it was worth every penny, it really is a bike you can ride up and absolutley bomb down. Worth taking one out for a test ride to try before you buy.

Just ride as many as you can then buy what you like, 99% here will just suggest what they already ride. ;)
The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.

    Try the:
    Lapierre Zesty 514 2009
    Giant Reign 0 2009

And if you have a Scott dealer near you, then also try the Scott Genius 30.
  • +1 for the scott genius 30 I had a test ride of one and it was soooo good but I thought that for 2800£ you would get more than an SLX and XT mix
