Why would one choose a rigid MTB over a hybrid, or vice versa?

Depends what your going to use it for.

    Hybrid for more raod stuff.

Rigid mtb for more path and off road stuff.

Got any two bikes in mind and what are you going to use it for?

Specialized Hardrock XC rigid on offer at our LBS vs Felt QX65, or if I come into more money Scott SUB 30. Scott apparently comes in either 26" or 700c formats, which is kinda the same question.

Wanting to do c. 50 miles a day panniered up with potential for some of it to be over ground like http://www.bike99.com/24.html but lot of road too.

A lot of hybrids are very similiar to old-fashioned rigid mtbs anyway... But, a rigid mtb will often be built a bit stronger (and heavier), and with geometry more suited to off road work. Tyre clearance can be different too, some hybrids are built pretty tight which is a pain if you want fat tyres (and fat tyres and rigids go very well together) Oh, a lot of hybrids carry higher gearing too, which is a good thing IMO for the road as MTB gearing tops out a bit too early with 4:1 as the highest gear. And not too big an issue offroad, you can always add a 34T cassette to win back the lowest gear
