New to this! Advice needed!

Hi people,
I'm just looking for a little bit of advice if possible?
I've been cycling for as long as I can remember, and have always settled for riding to and from work on my full sus XC bike. (haha, according to 'the game', I may as well not even have an FCN..)
However, I'm looking at just buying something simple to get to and from work, and or the occasional bit of road training..
Anyway, to get to the point, I've found a specialized centrum sport (08 model), for a respectable £250.. I like the idea of having a singlespeed, as I can happily fix anything that should/could go wrong, but as I've only ever had mountain bikes, I thought I'd pop in here and ask for your thoughts on the bike.. or, if you have any alternative suggestions, please let me know.
(if it's any help, I'm only looking to spend a few hundred, as in, a max budget of £300... I'm in good shape and there aren't many hills on the commute, so I think the SS idea will be a good way to go..)
