I always make major purchases with a credit card - for the protection it gives if things go wrong.

however i am about to buy a bike (mail order) through cyclescheme - what protection do i have if things go wrong ?

Your not buying the bike, your employer is. Your just renting it off them.

If I remember rightly its like a company car, the company is responsible for reapirs and service, it only becomes yours after your pre-arranged hire agreement has expired and you've paid for the bike at the currrent market value.

Then its the same as normal, the bike is still being bought and still has to be as specified

The company is NOT responsible for the upkeep of the bike, the user is
