I have been lucky enough to arrange a family holiday in Bourg d'Oisans in a few weeks time. I'm taking the bike (obviously!) and will hopefully get a good few rides in. But there will also be some non-cycling days and I wonder if anyone has any good tips or suggestions on places to go/ things to do. (bearing in mind I will be with a pregnant wife and a two year old...). We'll have a car so can easily drive short distances to interesting places. All thoughts welcome!!

go up the cable car onto La Meije (out of La Grave). The high mountain scenery is great.
Grenoble is an interesting city and well worth a visit, even if just to hang out in Place Grenette and have a coffee.
also, go for a drive up the Vercors to find the gorges and take a picnic.0 -
Alpe d'Huez is a summer resort in its own right.

Great scenery at St Christophe (Alpinist Museum - its a famous climbing centre and check out the graveyard!) and the road to La Berade
Venosc - arty/crafty village
Chateau at Vizille
Great little museum in Bourg (especially good on crystals/quartz etc)

Zen - we were in the same boat last year. Pregnant wife & 18 month old. We did a fair bit of walking/hiking (my wife was 6/7 months pregnant) I carried our 18 month old on a Macpac possum child carrier which she loves. We walked up to Lac Lauvitel (hard work), at the end of La Berarde valley (not too strenous & wonderful scenery - good picnic spots about an hour along).
Take the cable cars up to the snow at Les Deux Alpes. We had to lie that ours was over 2 but she loved playing in the snow. Also up to the glacier views at La Meije as pneumatic mentioned.
There also a nice pool with grassy area in Bourg D'Oisans.
The tourist office in Bourg should give you some ideas too.0 -
I can also recommend Les Deux Alpes, stayed there last year when watching the Alpe d'Huez stage.
They have a cracking beach, which was really family friendly.
It's to the left as you enter the town, a little tricky to find but well worth a visit to the tourist info point to find it and especially refreshing after you have ridden up and down col's all day0 -
Hi, have been in Bourg last few years with toddlers/babies (in June). There is a lovely playground in Allemont - right next to Tourist info and bakery. Much nicer than the park in Bourg. I used to go on a picnic with children while OH did his rides. . Also a couple of good (small) playgrounds at the top of the Alpe.
The pool in Bourg is fabulous for children - stunning setting. There is also an indoor pool at Alpe d'Huez, open year-round - good if weather is bad!
Have also done cable car at Les Deux Alpes but may be some issues with altitude for toddler and pregnant wife (that's why there is an age limit on going right to the top of the glacier).
I absolutely loved Valloire - cable car was great and children loved it. Briancon is beautiful but probably has limited interest for 2 year old. Trip & picnic up to Croix de Fer also spectacular - reservoir excellent setting for a stop, views of Mt Blanc if you head over the Glandon..
Yous don't say when you are going but we have been the last few years to see the Dauphine and because it has been out of primary holiday season, quite a lot of attractions were closed or on restricted opening hours. Saying that, we never struggled for anything to do.0 -
Many thanks to all who replied - I followed a lot of your suggestions and all worked out very nicely.

Any particularly worth a visit Zen? Also...a beach at Deux Alpes?! How do you get there? Next to a lake I presume?0

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread, but I'm going to anyway
Bourg does sound good - at least for younger kids. What would there be for two teenagers to do?
Trying to work out if this is a viable holiday for my two teenagers.0 -
I have stayed in the area for the past 3 years with my teenage boys and they have loved the area. However it was a very MTB based holiday and they loved the lifts at Alpe d Huez and Deux Alpe.
Swimming at Allemont they enjoyed because of the diving board and no real H&S rules.
Climbing tower at Allemont.
Also did self guided gorge climbing and canyoning
Lake at Allemont good for water sports.
Toboggan runs at ADH and Deux Alpe.
Lots of other paid for activities in the area.
2 Via Ferrata in the area.
We are going again this summer because we find the area meets everyone's needs.0
