Ok, the rim is a bontrager select disc (rear) and the tyre is an panaracer fire xc pro (not the one with the red ring, a slightly thicker version)

I can put other tyres on this rim quite easily and the tyre fits my other rear wheel pretty easy as well.

I want to put this particular tyre on this particular wheel as it's the best setup I have at the moment.

I've been trying for a good hour to get the tyre on the rim. there's just a small part left. that's just one side of the tyre. I haven't even got to the part where i put the innertube in and put the other side of the tyre in yet.

It's quite annoying cos the front one only took 5 mins.

have you got the tyre bead seated in the well of the rim? (deepest section in the middle of the rim)

Washing up liquid around the rim can help as a lube to fit tight tyres.

I've got most of the tyre bead in, there's just a small part.

i'll try the washing up liquid! :D

also when you say deepest section. is there a part of the bead that's slightly thicker than the rest as I didn't notice?

I meant deepest section of the rim, the tyre bead is equal all the way round.

As in the tyre bead should be in the very middle of the rim (where the rim tape is) when seating the tyre.

Use tyre lever to push the last bit on to the rim.
