A couple of ?'s for 705 users-

How useable is the basemap on the 705 to navigate by ?

Is it worth buying the european road mapping or does that just enable turn by turn directions?

Ta :D

  • The base map is very basic. it will do turn by turn but only has major roads which don't follow the exact path of the roads rather a simplified set of lines. get the road mapping if your a road cyclist, the topo stuff doesn't do routing and offers nothing visually as the screen is small and all the contours just make things confusing. they may be of use off road, i've used them while walking but on a bike you won't be able to study the details.

Basemap is pretty much useless imo, and I upgraded to the City Navigator NT Europe maps straight away.

Thanks, as I thought - City nav. map needed

Comes as a package so not that much more expensive.

    Cheers

the topo stuff doesn't do routing.

Mine does routing just as good as a Tomtom
I bought the mtb version which has the topo maps mainly because it came on dvd.It only does the UK but I'm not planning on riding abroad.
I like the fact that with the maps installed on my pc I can use it with garmin training centre and I can easily plan routes which I want to use.
    Its the same price too.
  • As far as I've been able to tell the Topo maps actually use routing based on whatever the base map underneath is. I.e it routes turn by turn but only on major roads not using minor ones like the city nav maps do

I've never had any issues with minor roads, they all show up the same and I get diverted via the routing I've selected in the settings.
I still get all the POI and petrol stations etc.
I think the only difference is that one comes on a dvd which imo offers more features and the city one comes as plug and play on an SD card
