transit protection or something more?

I recently got a new Giant off roader and when it was delivered it had a plastic 'protector' between the last cog on the cassette and the spokes - is this supposed to stay on or was it just to protect things whilst it transit?
I know it's probably a daft question, but it looks quite cheap and tacky, but if it serves a purpose perhaps I should leave it on...

is the last cog the big one or the small one?"Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Almost certainly a spoke protector. It's supposed to be there to protect the wheel if the chain falls off the top of the largest cog.
I'm not convinced they do a whole lot of good and seen a lot of people take them off.0 -
the spoke protector, a clear disc.
that requires a chain whip and cassette tool to remove it none destructively.
depends on how happy you are that you will not be putting the chain in the spokes."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
