I'm riding a 30, but that's just to test it out for the Alps in 2 weeks. Otherwise I'm not expecting to need anything like that.

I don't think the hills will be too steep in the Highclere, but the distance will make some of the late one seem it.

Where did you get a 29 from? What cassette is it?

Live nearby and do the climbs regularly. Dont think you will need a 29.

None of the hills are ultra steep, topping out at 10 to 15%,they are very draggy tho and sap the life out of your legs, especially later on.
I'm using a compact with 12/25.Should be sufficient.
    Have a good one :D

Hmm. I have a double - 27 combo. Did some pretty steep hills in Wales, so hopefully will be OK!!! I'm quite fit, but 126 miles is a looooooooooong way to cycle!

Is a 34 not good enough? I'm sure most people can get up any hill in a 34.

the 'old' (i.e. pre 2009) campagnolo 10 speed has a 13-29 cassette as an option.

i've been riding this coupled with a standard 53/39 chainset for the last few years. the combo provides more than enough gearing for both long alpine climbs and short sharp 25% gradients.
  • Gearing depends on your fitness of course, but the Highclere though long and undeniably hard is also fair - a compact 12/25 should be fine or if you are strong enough a 39 - 12/25. None of the hills are super steep or long and the hardest one is near the start. What you will need is the mental trickery to keep going if you haven't cycled 126 miles before. I hadn't and the last 15 were hard.
