Lion of Flanders adds bite to Smithfield menu
Former World Champion and three-time winner of Paris-Roubaix, Johan Museeuw, will be Rapha’s guest of honour at this Saturday’s Smithfield Nocturne in Central London. The Lion of Flanders, who retired in 2003 and last raced in the UK in 1996 when he came third in the Leeds Classic, will be joined by Geraint Thomas, winner of last year’s Nocturne, at the event which begins at 6 pm.
An impressive field of riders will contest the elite race with the major domestic squads all represented, including an on-form National Criterium Champion Dean Downing and his Rapha Condor team, Ed Clancy and Rob Hayles from Halfords as well as teams from Madison.co.uk and CandiTV-Marshalls Pasta.
Hot on the heels of last weeks emphatic victory in the Edinburgh Nocturne by Garmin’s David Millar, Ben Swift is the latest rider to put his post-Giro fitness to good use on home soil at a Nocturne. The Katusha rider, who is still only 21, had seven top-ten finishes in the Giro, coming third behind Alessandro Petacchi and Mark Cavendish in stage two, and hopes to have a similar effect on this Saturday’s field as Millar and team mate Cameron Meyer did last week.
The Smithfield Nocturne is free to attend and will take place around Smithfield Market between 6pm and 10pm on Saturday, June 6.Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom0 -
Good to see Ralfa keeping true to their old skool traditions by having old dopers as their guest of honour. How very authentic.0

Mussuew can't be made to pay for the hundreds who did the same...I think it reasonabe that he is allowed back at some point. I am sure he was still a very good bike rider without drugs.0
-
As long as there is no real price/penalty to pay these situations and these people will arise.
Zero Dollarence is the only answer. I sit here at home happy to know I did not support his attendance0 -
I was there. It was a good evenings entertainment. But I have never seen so many fakengers! It was hilarious!!0

Had a great evening at the Nocturne - here are a few photos if you are interested.

who won?!?!?!?!?!?! report anyone?0
-
There is no information available anywhere, I mean anywhere, I even went into websites belonging to leading contenders, nothing, no pictures words video anywhere, Boycott?
I held to my statement that I would not attend as Museeuw is not now nor never was my type of pin up adulatorial person. I'd rather drink hiss.0 -
I popped down to catch a bit of the Elite crit. Was quite shocked by how big a lad ben Swift is, i expected a whippet but he looked quite solid. I suppose thats why he's been able to hold his own in the sprints..0

Yep thanks for the results. I agree that it is ubelievable that they are nowhere. I am surprised that Swift didn't take the win - I would like to know how it unfolded.Contador is the Greatest0

There were never any significant breakaways and it came down to the sprint from the last cornerroad0 -
Blimey and Downing had Swift, someone who put up good speed against Cavendish.Contador is the Greatest0
-
To be fair it is only about a 200m sprint from the final 90 degree corner - get that corner slightly wrong and you'll never get back in contentionroad0

Yeah I guess so, if you are not leading then you are probably out of it.Contador is the Greatest0

"Mussuew can't be made to pay for the hundreds who did the same...I think it reasonabe that he is allowed back at some point. I am sure he was still a very good bike rider without drugs."
Sorry Dave that wasn't the point I was trying to make - it was the pure irony of having him as guest of "honour" that made me fall off my chair laughing!
And I'm glad you are sure he was a very good bike rider without the drugs. For me, someone who cheered him on from my sofa watching all those classics on Europsport, had posters of him all over the garage walls, bought classic Mapei kit because of him, lusted over a C40 just like the one he had, well I just feel cheated...and we'll never really know where and when, will we?
Glad to hear it was a good night. I was in Edinburgh last week and it was brilliant! Come back next year please!!! Won by another ex doper too. Luckily the argyle doesn't do it for me!0 -
more pics and a (sort of) write up here:

You wouldn't have known Museeuw was there. I didn't hear his name mentioned once.
There were a lot of trendy fixed gear bike riders knocking about; but people should realise that this is becoming a sub culture all of its own even with specialist bike shops (e.g. 14 bike co in Spitalfields) and its own magazine (Fixed). I think they're ok but I won't be joining their ranks anytime soon.
The elite race looked ridiculously fast, I had thought the support race looked fast but the elites were flying.0 -
It was all great and more importantly a great advert for cycling
The organisers really have put a good event together which I believe would be interesting to a non cyclist let alone a the masses of cycling Junkies that were there.

puts me off using the site"If I was a 38 year old man, I definitely wouldn't be riding a bright yellow bike with Hello Kitty disc wheels, put it that way. What we're witnessing here is the world's most high profile mid-life crisis" Afx237vi Mon Jul 20, 2009 2:43 pm0
