Hilarious! I don't imagine that there were towns queuing up to serve as stopover points:

"The prisoners, all serving jail terms of between five and 10 years, will make stopovers in 17 different towns, each of which has a jail. "

There are excellent opportunities for the concept to be turned into a film, with Vinnie Jones wearing the maillot jeune and Fulton Mackay as chief warder trying to keep up. Queue Benny Hill theme music.....

They will have to cycle in a pack, will not be ranked and, for obvious reasons, breakaway sprints will not be allowed.

    Teeheeheee!

However, I have to get all right wing and point out that prison is prison, not a bloomin' holiday camp. If I commit a crime and get put away will I get to tour france on my bike?

Probably not, but how about a tour of the former prison island of Australia? :D

    although....

""If we behave well, we might be able to get released earlier, on probation," he said.

Prison official Sylvie Marion said the project aims to help the prisoners "reintegrate into society by fostering values like effort, teamwork and self-esteem".

"We want to show them that with some training, you can achieve your goals and start a new life," Reuters quoted her as saying. "

Can't argue with the rehabilitation of offenders bit....all the things said sound great....hope it works for some of the inmates and gives them an opportunity to actually contribute to society.

    bravo i say. :D

of course...most are likley to re-offend...but...hey..
Whenever I see an adult on a bicycle, I believe in the future of the human race.

    Ooooooh yes please!

I wonder what level of crime I'd have to commit to be deported...

I understand that stealing a loaf of bread would qualify. Note that women are expected to work as domestic servants and farm labourers in the colonies.

It does go to show how much more respect cycling is accorded in France as opposed to here. Redemption through pedalling. I think in fact it may be their 'national' sport and most Frenchies would give up any football success etc to have a French Tour winner. Or at least not to have any more Belgian or American ones.

    I love this line:

    :D

Personally I think someone got carried away when reading about how to (ahem) "break the cycle of crime"

    French.

    Cycle.

Yep - that would do it

I don't mean to come over all Always Tyred, but doesn't this article actually give the *old* meaning to "chain gang"?
