Hi,
I have decided i am getting a pair of conti mountain kings, But my question is, I can get the wire ones for £27 a pair, Where as the supersonic are £55 a pair. Is the black chilli compound supersonics really worth the extra £30

Have a look here for all the versions and explainations:

Wire, folding, protection ans supersonic. At least go for folding.

In short, the black chili is worth it IMHO. I'd be wary of getting the standard or supersonic variants though, seen a lot of reports of the sidewalls on them tearing. Got a 2.2 Protection myself, couldn't be happier with it.

+1 for 2.2 Protections. They do it all and are still pretty light.

Gezza - I am considering Supersonics (not sure which yet) - a very easy way to shed about 3-400 grams of rotating weight!!

Mine have performed faultless since Ive gone tubeless with them i started off running them with the supersonic tubes and that was at least one puncher every ride
Which rapidly became annoying so i got a Stans-Notubes kit and low and behold no more punchers except one possibly

i was night riding at about 11pm back in December i think and noticed that the rear tire was a bit soft, so i stopped and due the terenchal rain i just whipped the tire off and bunged a tube in.
The next day when i took a proper look i couldn't see anything so when back to tubeless and there was a small slash about 2mm long in the tire which sealed.

Don't be afraid of the Supersonics. I run 2.4 supersonic version F & R. Regularly hammer the bike and i'm quite heavy 14st. I've had one puncture in 4 months. That was my own fault for running too low pressure on the black route at Glentress.

The turn of speed is excellent with the lightweight supersonics. What a difference in bike weight. Just use a normal tube.

    Cheers

the protections are black chilli too.

Again I have to ask a question on somebody elses thread, where can you get them for £55 a pair? Looking to get some for winter.

I had the 2.2 Supersonics, but sold them after 2 rides, for me they just didn't do the job they're supposed to. Neither fast nor grippy, just a poor in-between with no strengths and lots of weaknesses. Very poor on wet roots, I pushed more in those 2 spring rides than I ever did all through winter. But, I had no issues at all with punctures or strength, and they did get pretty hard at times.

I have to agree with northwind, i had the protection 2.2" and didnt think they were grippy at all, i'd run Nobby nics previous and loved them, but i changed the mountain kings for Kenda Nevegal's DTC and swear by them now, even bought another pair of Nevegals for my other bike.

Its each to there own, you may love them. If you dont, flog them on ebay and buy the next recommended pair of tyres, i did, and do that with most bike parts i dont get on with

i have found the Kenda Nevegal's DTC to be amazing too! in the wet, at about 35 PSI-ish, still fast, and just so much grip

( i weigh 13 stone), and tires were used at lladegla and Marin ( wet, very wet!)

Mmm, I'd never call the nevegals fast, I love them to bits but they do drag even with the DTCs, IMO. Now my new small block 8s, those are rapid. without being either too thin or too slippy.
