edited June 2009 in MTB buying advice
I had originally set my sights on a Boardman Comp but have had to reset my budget due to disapproval from the other half.
I have shortlisted these 2 bikes based on value for money.
I have had a ride on both & i am still undecided. Does anyone have experience of owning either of these & can hopefully point me towards the right purchase.

The Malt took 3rd place in a 12 bike test in a recent mag (I can't remember the name). The only complaint was the frame is getting a little old, still a good bike.

Personally I'm going for a core 20 and there are a few threads around detailing people's experiences with it. Do a search and you'll find them :)

iv just got a merlin malt 1 very good bike but also i like the core 20 merlin frame is very stiff and handles well but i can not comment on the core not riden one.
core is a nicer looking bike.
  • I tried a few in that price range, nd I'm getting my Core 20 in the next few days when the CTW guys work their magic.

It felt good to ride, and I've yet to see one on the trails.

Thanks for the comments, much appreciated. I think i will go with the Core. Let you know how i get on. Soon the trails will be awash with lime green!

I've had two Malt 1s. One from 98 or so (stolen) and one from 2007 (current commuter). The frame is very stiff, and is pretty light. With a good fork it's an excellent ride.

Went for the Core myself. Ruled the Malt out early on as I was unable to test ride.

You can pick the Core 20 up for about £550 from Square Wheels and Evans price match.

Not really had a chance to give mine a good ride out but had a couple of small rides and enjoyed very much.

Now suffering though with a drunken dance floor related knee injury so depending on when the swelling goes down might a be a couple of weeks still before I get out on it.
