ok had these forks on my P7 for 8 month now...

When they fully extend from being compressed, they make a knocking noise. Such as when you do a jump off a curb - compressed- then spring out to full extension when front wheel is in the air.

it was not there before i went to afan and gave them a hammering.

has anybody experienced this with any fork?
is something "i dont know what" loose..?

i am a complete novice with suspension, but not afraid to dissassemble as i am confident with this sort of thing.

thought i would put it out there before i start unscrewing things - any help in this area is also appreciated.

thanks

PS, the rebound seems to make no difference to the noise or the rebound speed, also the travel adjustment makes no difference to the noise.

    sounds like service time.

If the rebound adjuster is not making any difference to the rebound speed sounds like the oil has done a runner.

reasonably priced fork oil for your service:
    http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=112

Check the service manual but you will probably need 5wt and 15wt for a full oil change. Did my Tora SL's recently and needed 5wt for the upper compression damper on the lockout side and 15wt which sits in the lower legs

so sounds like i need to service anyway, - any pointers?

so would loosing oil cause a sound like this then, or is it something else as well?

thanks for the link and replies.

    Did you bottomed the fork?

I had the same problem, and when I took to service from where I bought the bike,
a guy from there told me that he did exactly the same thing on his Tora three times.
What they did to my fork is, replace some rubber part and they used heat to fit (glue, don't know) the part.
I think they mentioned that the rebound went down the legs. But I'm probably talking nonsence.

Btw, my fork is Dart 2.

No I have never bottom the fork out, I could tell that due to the dust / dirt line on the chromed stanchion.

Think I'm gonna try open it up and see if rebound oil stuff is missing as suggested. It's rideable, just gets on my nuts.

    Thanks all

This happened to my Tora 302's after I serviced them. Was plainly something I'd done, so pulled it apart again, really greased the spring, put it back together & the clunk was gone. Whether it wasn't seated correctly or what, I don't know, but it did the trick.

As a guide, if you can change oil on a car, servicing the Tora's is a piece of cake in comparison. 2 nuts & 2 bolts to undo, a spring to remove & re-grease on the L/H leg & on the R/H leg, a damper & rebound unit to remove & re-fit along with new oil.

Just take your time & have plenty of rag to hand, as it's a messy job!

    Service guide here:
    http://www.sram.com/_media/techdocs/95- ... 0Guide.pdf

Ignore the bits about replacing the seals & O rings etc if you're just replacing the oil.

If that doesn't work, it may be your bushes need replacing. Afan shows no mercy to cheap forks!

Does that also apply to the Air Tora's ?

I have a set of Tora Air 318's that have developed a knocking noise on the very first part of the travel when compressing the forks. They are holding good air and are not leaking oil but have a very irritating knocking/clicking noise at the beginning of the compression stroke ?

Ive read the service link for them and it looks fairly involved !!

Even if you dont replace any of the seals i presume with the Air version its not just a case of whacking loads of grease on em ? :? :(

    Any help appreciated.

    thanks

Solo air forks have always had a slight click tight at the top of the travel as the air chamber valve equalizes the positive and negative chambers.

The system may need a clean, new o rings and fresh lube oil.

I have had a similar problem with my Pike coil forks.

I have had them for about 6 months and it feels as if someone has put a lock-out on them. I am still getting about an inch of travel and it is making a knocking noise.

Does anyone know what this problem might be and how might I fix it?

Any help would be very helpful

Yes, see the FAQ section for advice on Rockshox motion control dampers. It is near the top.
