I am [hopefully] picking up my new Kona Cinder Cone tomorrow and will get chance to take it on a couple of short jaunts before I take it to Dalby Forest on some trails.

I've done some very easy XC riding before but nothing major, mainly bridle paths through light woods etc. so what can I expect on my first proper ride? Anything I should take with me other than my bike and a pump!?

    What to expect;
      - sore legs - some faffing about with the saddle height - rain - sweat - mud - possibly a small amount of blood - a big grin at the end

    enjoy :D
    Everything in moderation ... except beer
    Beer in moderation ... is a waste of beer

    If riding an XC race bike is like touching the trail,
    then riding a rigid singlespeed is like licking it
    ... or being punched by it, depending on the day

    you forgot about the raging hunger for carrot cake and a big mug of tea..

    I've not picked the bike up yet which I am gutted about. There's been a delay at the shop and I'm waiting for a call to let me know if I can go get it tomorrow. All this waiting is doing my swede in.

    I was unsure as to whether to get a 'lid' as I doubt I will be performing any death defying maneouvres but after speaking to a few people I think I will now pick one up at the same time as the bike. That way I can try them on and see which one makes me look the least like I have a mushroom for a head.

    Hmmm - a helmet is a must if you ask me and gloves are also a good idea, possibly even knee/shin and elbow pads if you are a "risk taker". If you go on the Dalby red and haven't done much cycling before it is best to keep within your limits or at least don't go too fast too soon as there is plenty of potential for binning it! I still have a nasty habit of pushing a bit above myself and wiping out and it usually seems to hurt more when I do this at a trail centre perhaps because there are more hard trees, roots and rocks around than a lot of the boggy moorland I normally inhabit. So choose carefully where to crash!

    HA! Gradually swapping sports for this game to SAVE money! Believe me this seems like a budget sport compared to some!! :D
