Finally did it!
Commuted to work today for the first time. 14.5 miles there, 14.4 back (one way system.)
It was absolutely brilliant and I couldn't keep the silly grin off my face. :D:D
I'm lucky enough to have to cross the Humber Bridge to get to work and thought it was even more lovely than normal this morning, especially when I didn't have to pay!
Sorry if I've posted in the wrong place but I had to tell people who would understand!
(Husband's been commuting for years but even he's getting irritated by me going on about it now!)
I have a triple and I'm not afraid to use it.

Excellent! As said above, it makes the daily grind a lot more bearable; almost enjoyable even. :)

Actually no-one. I was going to order a pizza to celebrate but by the time I'd finshed the loaf of bread I dived into when I got home I was too full so my mechanic had to settle for sarnies too! So I suppose I 'cooked'

Does this mean I can now eat what I want?

Cos I was starving today. I'm lucky enough to have a big store cupboard in my classroom - yes, big enough to change in and keep my bike safe in - and I had to keep nipping in for a handful of Crunchy Nuts all morning!

    I would have cooked but

    1) Needed to set the bike up for her ready for tomorrow, new tubs, full bearing regrease, true wheels, set up brakes gears etc - this could get tiresome...

    2) I can't cook for sh1t

The only place i have less talent than on the bike is in the kitchen

Doing it in the summer is all well and good but in the winter wind and rain is another matter, especially crossing the bridge. Sorry to put a downer on a good day but rain and wind will meet you soon.
I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

my experience of commuting is that if you make it habit then the bad weather days are just another day.

i have found myself "sheltering" from the wing and rain in the winter on that bridge, barely able to hold the bike on the ground

i think the key is getting it going and this is the time of year to make it habit...

When riri first does it in the rain/wind (and she will, i know) it will be another achievement - have to see the challenge in a positive light - thats what gets me out on those rough winter mornings!!

As I've found when riding the 1st Severn Bridge there will be a leeward side offering more shelter, usually the inland side.

the humber bridge is a bit of a b*gger when its windy - the railings wouldnt stop you getting blown over and the end sections arent very sheltered (either direction!)

plenty of chamois' stained on windy days...

Nice one, I commute over the Humber Bridge too (27 mile round trip), fantastic on the sunny days like today but a real challenge when it's pi55ing it down in a 40mph headwind.

Hope you keep it up when the bad weather comes around, it's not as much fun doing the ride in the rain and wind but much more satisfying when you get there.

Watch out for the crosswinds as you past the main pillars!!

Mate, dem pillars is bstards in the wind - i usually unclip, and try and ride past em, but it certainly is hairy - real frightening first time you do it.

If you see a bloke on a px kaffenback going across it's probably me...please smile or wave - a lot of 'em don't who ride across there (i always smile/wave BTW)

See you on the bridge captain!

What time do you cross the bridge?

I go North about 06:15 and South about 16:45, every weekday except Wednesdays.

Can't miss me really in my horrific bright yellow top, hoping I get seen and not run down on Hedon Road.

Like you I acknowledge others riders but the vast majority just ignore me, maybe it's cos I'm on an MTB (Giant XTC).

Should be getting my new Boardman Pro Ltd Hybrid any day now, so moving up the food chain a little.
  • Top Job!! nearly 30miles, that is a "Commute".

I have ridden over the Humber Bridge a couple of times, lovely ride, I should imagine that's a nice wake up call. Might be a bit cold when it's blowing though
