Tyre Choice

I'm riding La Marmotte in July and currently ride on Michelin Pro Race 3's with butyl inner tubes and am thinking of changing to Veloflex Records with some latex inner tubes to give me a bit less rolling wight to drag up those mountains!

I've read the pros and cons of latex inners and realise I can save some roling weight on the tyre choice as well, but I would appreciate any advice from riders who are using these combinations. Many thanks

I honestly think you are fine with what you have!

I'm similarly off the the alps this summer and have just picked up some new tyres in anticipation. I'm not sure I'd be too happy with the lack of puncture protection on a really lightweight tyre - imagine the consequences of a blowout on one of the descents! Also, the veloflex record is 20mm and this is going to affect ride comfort, which may be a factor on a long ride.

In the end I settled for the new Vittoria Corsa Evo II as a good blend between rolling resitance, weight, comfort and reasonable durability - will be fitting them when they arrive in the post this week. I think you'll be fine with the PR3, they tick many of the same boxes.

I've been using the Corsa Evo CX's and they've been terrible!! Massive gashes in the first two weeks; I've temporarily placed some thick duct tape on the inner side over one particular hole after several punctures in two hours of riding, caused by the innertube bulging from within. Not a scratch (in more than one sense) on my Pro Race's.

I do ride through Hackney though  but still, the Pro Race's have held up brilliantly.

Open Corsa Evo CXs are excellent tyres. I've been using them on my Neutron Ultras since the new year. Survived the Welsh winter with no punctures, so I was confident of bringing them to Manchester. Today was the first time I used them in England........

........and got two punctures. I can't blame the tyres as they served me well during the winter. I blame England - it's nowhere near as good for riding as it is at home. I only get punctures in England, the roads are busier, a higher percentage of drivers are w@nkers in England (rides normally go without dodgy driving in Wales, but rarely a ride here that I don't see someone do something stupid), too many traffic lights here too, I bet London is even worse.....

Yep, you're about right there, not that I've cycled in Wales at all. I'm pretty ace at trackstanding though 8)
