Garmin 705 SD 2009 Map issue

I have a Garmin 705 with City Navigator for Europe 2009 on the SD card. I have an issue in that when on some organised rides and using a route supplied by the organisers I may accidentally go off route and on some occasion have noticed that the roads I am riding down, whilst off route, do not show on the Garmin despite the roads being B roads and being many years old. I have tried to update the map on the SD card but cannot find a way to do this. So I have two questions. 1 How do I update the map on the SD card and 2. Why do the roads not show on my Garmin even thou I have the map loaded to the SD card and active in the device?
