Hi, im a long time lurker and havent posted in ages but would appreciate any help. I have a metalic clicking/ticking somewhere at the front of my bike. Its a Santa cruz chameleon with a faced head tube, king headset,o/s thompson 4x stem & ea70 bars & RS revelations, coil u turn ones (85-130) i think they are 07s poss 08s... the noise has been happening recently and is getting worse.. went for a ride on the south downs yesterday and it was driving me nuts...if i ride along and turn the bars quickly it does it, click, click and if i flex the bars stationary whilst pushing down i get this annoying click...sounded like in the headtube area but now im not convinced..Ive stripped down the bars, stem, spacers, taken the forks out, cleaned the whole lot and put back together with copper grease under all bolt heads and all torqued properly with a good torque wrench.. im now thinking its in the crown area of the forks or possibly inside. Has anyone else had this issue runng revs? Are there any known probs with crowns/steerers creaking on these?? Could it be an issue inside em? Sorry for the long post.... any help appreciated. Ride On....Chris.

well as the valves work they do make some noise.

as you have, it seemed, ruled out just about everything else.
    Or your headset is dead.

  • Headset is a Chris King, about 1 year old, pretty sure i's not the culprit. It's not the valves as i dont have to compress the forks to get it clicking, im puzzled...

Take the bars and stem off, and just push the frame down at the front. Still there?

Try your quick release to see if it's tight enuff.

It's not uncommon for deflection in the lowers to cause the spring inside the forks to just touch the inside of the stanchions when under compression, this would result in a slight click/ting noise as metal hits metal.

Nothing too much to worry about really, but I do have to ask if it's not an overly loud noise (is it?) how do you hear it when riding? Surely the noise from tyres on trail would be much louder
  • Try checking your cassette. I had a similar problem and could have sworn it was coming from the headset, but it turned out my cassette was a little loose.
  • Try checking the bolt that holds the travel adjuster cap on the fork is tight. I had the same problem on my rockshox pikes.
