I've never used one and never really had a problem but I quite like the idea of being able to check properly that I've achieved an even tension. However, I suspect that with experience a wheelbuilder will end up with the right tension anyway.
I always keep spoke nipples in a small oil filled pot so that the have minimal friction when tightening. Because that also means they'll have consistent friction I think that helps to get them equal. Works for me on wheels for tandems, trikes and singles.
So probably not necessary but a nice to have.
