edited June 2009 in MTB buying advice
im stuggling with tyre choice atm, being new to the MTB scene and poping myself in the XC catagory as i like going uphill aswell as down. and luckily i found myself owning a Giant Anthem X2, so im one of those morons that has "all the gear but no idea :p".

anyway after about 8 hours of riding (day 2 on the bike) i got a nice tear in the rear tyre side wall (a Schwalbe Raching Ralph). replaced the tyre and a week later i did the same to the front. i dont know if i ride too agressivly or have bad luck / skill. im quick but not super fast. so i was wondering if you other riders out there rock any tyre that is a fast roller and not too hard to get upto speed but that has strength that i wont rip through the walls. i like the feel of the Racing Ralph, speedwise and grip, but there expensive to keep replacing and i read they can be vunerable to shoulder attack.

i ride trail centres (normally wales, few trips to scotland) and the local area: which is generally woods with a loose rocky surface in parts, some scattered rocks laying arround about the size of a small football, and mud(unnily enough) any of you in the South east probly know what i mean about the rocks.

anyway all your help (and other tips) would be appriciated, and finally appologies if this should be in buying advice but i thought as its more about XC it would feel at home here.

so any tyres that will feel race fast but last longer than a single ride.

    Maxxis crossmark!!

It's what they use on all the demo bikes at Glyncorrwg and wht MBR use on the bikes they test so they all have the same tyre.

i ride with racing ralphs/nobby nics and since changing over to them i have had a few much pinch flats when running at lower tyre pressures but all in all i think they're great tyres

Normal Racing Ralphs have notoriously thin sidewalls (to save weight) but are therefore more prone to tears. You're always going to have that compromise with any tyre though. Something like a Continental Race King or Speed King with the protection carcass might be a better option (beefed up version of their normal tyre).
