Well I figured it's about time I built my own bike  so I present to you my custom build thread!
Got my first load of deliveries in the post today:

3575539053_3d13ccbd14.jpg

Kore stem, controltech seatpost, Gusset seat clamp, charge spoon saddle, goodridge cable set, a few spacers and a set of rockshox Toras.

3575541541_a804365f6c.jpg

Add that to my deore crankset, mg-1 pedals, Xt rear and deore front mechs, and deore shifters aswell as an sram chain and shimano cassette (not shown).

I also have an FSA carbon riser, charge sponge grips, chainstay protector and of course the charge duster frame coming my way in the post.

I'm also going to get some diskbrakes + rotors and a new wheelset to go with my speedking/raceking tires and flyweight tubes.

Will keep you updated.

Conor

    This will be nice. :)

How much is it going to cost you in total out of interest?

Well it's still an approximation because I haven't got everything yet and a few of the parts are being taken from another bike but here's a rough idea:

    Bars - FSA K force carbon riser - £35
BB - Shimano Octalink from XTC
    Brakes - deore 535 + Rotors 160mm- £60??
Cables - Goodridge Gear Cable set (White) - £24.99
    Cassette - shimano hg80 - from XTC
    Chain - sram pc-951 - from XTC
Chainstay protector - charge chipper (black) - £4.50
Crankset - Deore hollowtech - from XTC
    Forks - Rockshox tora 289 - £60
Frame (inc. headset) - charge duster - £220
Front Derailleur - Deore from XTC
    Front Mech shim - £4
    Grips - charge sponge (white) - £12
    Pedals - Wellgo MG-1 - £35
Rear Derailleur - XT from XTC
    Saddle - Charge Spoon White - £23.50
Seat clamp - Gusset Clench Seat Clamp (white) - £6.99
    Seatpost - Controltech Team Issue 2 27.2mm 350mm - £45
    Shifters - Deore from XTC
    Spacers (black) - £4
Stem - Kore Race stem 90mm 6 deg OS (white)- £19.50
    Tires - 1 x speedking 2.1 + 1 x raceking 2.2 - £40
    Tubes - Maxxis flyweight - £18
    Wheelset XT 775 - £160??

    Total: £772.48

Not too bad all things considered. Obviously you could still get an off the peg bike cheaper and a few of the parts are second hand but I'm reasonably happy and hopefully it'll turn out nice!

P.S. GSDog - you're black forest is stunning! I've seen official photos before but never realized just how rich and golden the orange colour was.

Where do you get the white cable set?

And a duster frame and that wheelset for so little  ?

You can get it from CRC but they're sold out so I got mine here http://www.stif.co.uk/gear/select_options.asp?productid=6853&store=mtb

However it's not as bright white as I'd hoped and isn't terribly long but we'll see when I fit it.

As to the duster frame, someone had bought a complete charge bike, stripped it and sold the frame in as new condition

The wheelset sale isn't finalized yet but hopefully will be soon. It's used but in good condition and perfectly true.

A rather disappointing result today compared to the vast array of shiney objects which arrived yesterday.
    One measly set of grips...

For those of you who are interested, I got bored this morning and so attempted to work out the approximate weight:

    Bars - FSA K force carbon riser - 188g
    BB - Shimano Octalink - 260g
    Brakes - 2 x deore 535 (inc hoses + levers) + Rotors 160mm- 1kg?
Cables - Goodridge Gear Cable set (White) - 200g?
    Cassette - shimano hg80 - 313g
    Chain - sram pc-951 - 297g
    Crankset - Deore hollowtech - 725g
    Forks - Rockshox tora 289 - 2360g
    Frame - charge duster - 2260g
    Front Derailleur - Deore - 171g
    Front Mech shim - 20g?
    Grips - charge sponge (white) - 120g?
    Headset - FSA - 100g?
    Pedals - Wellgo MG-1 - 374g
    Rear Derailleur - XT - 250g
    Saddle - Charge Spoon White - 258g
Seat clamp - Gusset Clench Seat Clamp (white) - 40g?
    Seatpost - Controltech Team Issue 2 27.2mm 350mm - 218g
    Shifters - Deore - 300g
    Spacers (black) - 20g?
Stem - Kore Race stem 90mm 6 deg OS (white)- 130g
    Tires - speedking 2.1 400g
    raceking 2.2 - 480g
    Tubes - Maxxis flyweight - 190g
    Wheelset XT 775 - 1700g

    Total: 12374g -27.3lbs

Weights of which I was unsure I put a question mark beside.

Reasonably pleased with the weight. With a lighter set of forks, brake set and crank it could probably be pushed down to a 25lbs bike. Hopefully should work out no heavier than the giant anyway.

    Quick question:
Any tips to get a crown race down to the very bottom without a specialized tool?

pieace of wood a bit longer than the steerer, hold the wood against the steerer resting on top the crown race, gently hammer down working different sides in a cross pattern until all the way down. use a little grease on the bottom of the race, or some loctite 641 if it's very easy to press down.

I did what you've done there with the weights when i was building my Lobster - worked out at 22.81lbs - actual weight is about 25lbs. Manufacturers are lying bastardo's!

    Just a quick update.

Wheels and brake sales have been finalized and should be in the post soon and hopefully charge sponge grips (in white this time) will be along shortly.

My final two exams are on Wednesday so I'm hopeing the stuff will be here on Wednesday or Thursday so I can go out for a celebration ride!

As to the weight I am expecting it to be over the figures I have there but Im not too concerned as long as it doesn't weigh a ton - I'm hoping to start competing in some XC races in the not too distant future and so I can train on the heavy bike and when I swap a few parts for lighter ones the race will seem like a breeze!

Here's a few snaps during and after the ride.

I think you have the seat post wrong way round? Usually it "leans back" rather than forwards.

Anyway what do you think of the saddle? I am thinking buying same one for my build.

    cheers

nice bike but ...... you've put the seatpost in backwards!!!!!

the head is tilting forward and as its a layback post should be backwards!!!!

and no offence to your build but those xt wheels seem a litlle out of place on what seems to be a "budget" ride .... unlesss of course you managed to get them way cheaper than the rrp lol

The seatpost is advertised as being "offset" rather than layback so I was under the impression you could use it like a stem (e.g. flipflop)?

And yes I did get the xt wheelset much cheaper than rrp. RRP is £400 and I got them for £170

bloody hell thats a good deal

wheere did u get them from?????
  • chorscroft
    chorscroft Posts: 254
Well they were bought second hand on classifieds but in really good nick so I'm still happy.

I wanted to get basically the best wheelset I could around the £150-£200 mark and originally I was going to get a Mavic 717/ xt hub combo but I couldn't resist the decals on the Xt wheelset 8)

    ahhh i see lol

ive got a set of 717s on xt hubs and they really are crap

the rear hub has been completely replaced and and has had a new freehub

    well done for avoiding them

The XT wheekset uses the same hubs anyway. Xt hubs are great though, seems like you just had a bad experience.

    I don't think they do.

Like you say though, XT hubs are generally good. There seem to be some crap ones floating about though.
