Im a big Under Armour fan. Use there Heatgear & Coldgear stuff for football, golf & cycling.

Not a technical mindset, but the principle (as I undertsand it) is that the underlayer wicks moisture away faster than if it just saturated the outer layer. The speed at which water is taken away from the skin is supposed to be the determining factor as to how well one cools.
