Simple pedal questions

I'm looking to get some new pedals for my new bike, as I'm not keen on the cheap resin ones.

Can someone tell me what SPD means in relation to pedals?
Also, what are cleats?

And can anyone recommend some good pedals for general MTB riding?

    it is a clip in system that require suitable shoes to mount cleats on.

    Ah I see.
    So if I'm just going to be wearing trainer type shoes, then best to just go with flats?

    Aye flats are what you want. If you're after something cheap, then Wellgo V8s. Something a bit more expensive (but not much), would be a Wellgo MG1.
