Hi all, I have just got on a bike for the first time in 20 years as i have agreed to join a London to Paris cycle ride for charity. www.justgiving.com/stephenwestley I have just started training on my old moutain bike (ridgeback do they still make bikes?) I only have been out 3 times but really have the bug ( 3 cycle mags in a week)
My dilema is I know a road bike would we best for the trip but I dont want to spend a lot and then never use it again, would a hybrid be suitable for such a long journey.
Should I just bite the bullet and get a proper road bike? I have been offered a very good deal (i think) for a new 2009 Giant TCR Alliance 1 for £800 plus vat. Any help would be appreciated as at this rate I will be going on the Ridgeback.

The Giant is a good bike and a good buy at that price. You are right in thinking a road bike would be the best bet. Over the distances you'll be covering a hybrid will become uncomfortable as you only have one riding position. The drag of the tyres would also be greater than a road bike...... and road bikes just look cool!!!! You know you want one0
