Tyre advice for Mavic XC717 rims

Hi,
I've got a set of wheels on their way to me and they have Mavic XC717 rims. The max width these can take according to the Mavic website is 2.10 - I'm currently running some quite wide 2.25's so will more than likely need some new tyres.
I'm after something light(ish) folding (400-550g each) ...the tyre will be used for a short commute on the road and then the usual bridalways, roads, green lanes, general xc etc etc ay weekend and evenings ... No heavy stuff and for the most part the stuff I ride on is dry mud, small rocks etc with only a couple of muddier sections that never seem to dry out.
I'm looking for a tyre(s) that will not kill me on my commute but will also not kill me the first time I go around a dusty/rocky corner. I'm happy to have different tyres on front and rear if that will get me a better setup. I've been looking all weekend and the choice is quite bewildering!
I've mainly been looking at the usual suspects from Conti, Schwalbe and Maxxis. Oh and I'd prefer to not go above £50 for the pair.
Thanks in advance... Dr Worm

you will be fine with your current tyres as long as you like them."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

I'm running a Maxxix Mofo DH2.35 front & Scott Cougar 2.3 rear on my 517s (more or less the same) and have had no trouble at all. Had the front on skinnier hoops too.
Stick yours on see if they look ok before you squander any cash!

HAHA - you're just looking for an excuse!
For the record, my next set will be Conti Mountain King 2.4 front/Speed King 2.3 rear, Supersonics with Black Chili, hopefully tubeless (depends on the state of my rims at the time).
That'll be on 717s, most likely; unless my new forks mean the rear starts to get a battering!WTD:

The web site might say 2.1, but the little sticker on the rims will probably say 2.3. Mine does!..

Yep, I reckon that the 2.1 on the website is an attempt to get more people to buy 719s personally, just Mavic putting a bit of distance between their products, as Turok says the rim says 2.3 below a certain PSI (60 I think) so trust the rim not the advert
Various "experts" might tell you that fat tyres on narrow rims "feel horrible" without ever saying what exactly feels horrible about them, but I've used the 2.1 and 2.35 nevegals on 717s, without any handling differences on the fat ones, no rolling, no tyre shear, no nothing. And now I do the same on wider rims, and apart from feeling more cushioned they're the same. No ill effects whatsoever on the 717s. I guess really low pressures would be more problematic, and the tyre might be more likely to roll off if you puncture.Uncompromising extremist0 -
There's so much stuff you're not supposed to do that really just isn't a problem - annoys me when newer riders think they can't use their "xc" bike at a trail-centre or whatever...
Like Northwind says - it's probably more about establishing a product line, differentiating & creating need. And perhaps cutting down on warranty claims.
Rant over! 8)WTD:

I reckon the lawyers and the marketing guys are making stuff heavier and bigger than it probably needs to be for regular mortals, unless you're a 22stone american with an attack dog lawyer in tow..*Rock Lobster Team Tig SL (22lb 14oz)

I run 2.25 Nobby Nics in the winter on my 717's with no problems, although they actually measure less than 2.25. Am now running 2.1 Ralphs and they are excellent.0
