Hi,

I have a carrera vulcan v spec 08 and i am starting to do agressive xc to all mountain and was wondering if i should upgrade to discs and get new forks or save up for a higher end bike, as i am finding that the 100mm suntour fork isn't quite up to what i need. Thanks and what brakes wheels and fork would people recomend.

I assume you have checked but do the Vulcans wheels have disc compatible hubs - Eg. do the hubs have the 6 bolt holes for the disc bolts? If yes then potentially you could just add brakes and a new Fork (Rockshox Tora ?).

If not and you do need wheels, fork and brakes then I would say that would cost you £300-£350.

Your bike if its in decent nick should sell for £150 on Ebay if your lucky so IMHO you would be better off selling your vulcan, adding £350 to whatever you get and buying a new bike for £450-£500 - something with disc brakes and a Tora fork !
  • what would you recomend in the £450-500 price bracket?

Carrera Fury if you can stretch to £500.

    Halfords.

I would buy one if it was a litle lower in price.. I just cant stretch to the £500 mark and after speaking to my local Halfords its unlikely to drop in price again.

V Good recommendations on this site.

450 quid is unlikely to get you discs and toras. especially not from the mainstream manufactures such as specialized, scott etc.if yuo can, i'd wait till the '10 bikes come out later this year and get youyrslef an 09 bargain. that'll also give you some mopre time to save up for a better bike.
or try secondhand, bikes depreciate loads so 500 quid second hand gets you a cracking bike just a few years old.
i wouldnt bother upgradign parts, just upgrade the bike when you can!
I said hit the brakes not the tree!!

not a bad bike for the money at all but in your original post you complained about the 100mm suntour fork and the core 10 has a 100mm suntour fork!
    who cares?
  • i know the one on the carrera has no lock out and the preload adjusters did virtually nothing. The genesis has a radeon which looked better with lockout and i would probably upgrade to recons or toras later. Bike radar also rate it as the best hardtail under £500
  • just to add i have also seen the boardman sport ht for £550 which looks quite nice. Ideally i want a bike with a good frame to upgrade on.
