I had my eye on the Genesis, but had a little test ride on the Rockhopper. Any opinions of either, or what anybody would go for?
Are the Specilized frames better? Both have the same fork I think..

core is a nice ride and you dont see that many about unlike the rockhopper there every were.
The rockhopper is a good bike i like the frame on the core0 -
I would say both frames are very good and both will stand a large amount of upgrading. The Genesis is designed in the UK for the UK market.
I came to have to chose between the two and after riding I went for the Genesis. It just felt better to me.
Also, the Genesis Core 20 has better forks than the base model Rockhopper, that added to the fact you can get it for £550 if you shop smart where as the base level Rockhopper is just below £600, to get the same/similar fork on the Rockhopper you have to pay closer to £700.
Like bellys says, the Rockhopper is everywhere, it has constantly been likened to a Ford Mondeo during my buying process, in that same vane I would say the Core 20 was a Lotus Elise.
However, you've got to ride the bike and see which feels best if the Core doesn't feel right, despite it being better value, it will be a waste of money.0 -
I'll be getting it on the ride to work scheme, so the prices are very similar anyway at the shops I can use, so cost isn't really a factor for me.0
-
If cost is no factor I would say there probably isn't much in apart from the Genesis does have better forks in the Toras as opposed to the Rockhoppers Dart 3s.
It really will come down to which one you think feels better and you will get the most enjoyment out of..0 -
Cheers for that
The Rockhopper Comp has the Tora's too, so it's just about what fits by the sound of it..0 -
There is a slight difference in the forks. The Core 20 has Tora 289 and the Rockhopper a Tora SLite.
I genuinely have no idea what the difference is.0 -
you never looked at merlin iv got the malt1 very good ride.

Yeah, I chose a Malt 1 over the Rockhopper Comp a couple of years back but would have considered the Genesis too. There's nowt wrong with the Rockie but it's as common as muck and if you park it up at a trail center you won 't know which one is yours. The bottom bracket is also low on Speshs which can be a problem.0

The Hopper is more XC biased while the Core is a bit more of a trail bike I'd say. The Hopper has 100mm forks while the Core's are 120mm if I remember correctly. The Core gives the impression of being a lot more rugged (Don't know if it actually is) but generally speaking it's not any heavier.0

I started off wanting the Genesis. Then I leaned towards the Rockhopper. Now I'm thinking the Genesis is better for what I'll be using it for.
And it's green!0 -

Very green. So it must be good.0 -
Had a sit on the Core today, and i think its the one for me.
The chap said it's british built for the british terrain, so he would get it over the Specialized. How much of that do you reckon is sales garbage and how much is true?0 -
They are designed for the british climate, some blurb about mud clearance.
Have you decided which frame size your getting?Boardman Hybrid Pro
Planet X XLS0 -
Glad you liked it. I only sat on mine and thought it was right for me. Then the ride proved it.
I think the designed in the UK for the UK market is a marketing point from Genesis but I suspect there is an element of truth in it.
In fact a review of the Core 00 in Mountain Biking UK said there were some nice design points that made it ideal for the UK market.0 -
I think the UK touches are the mud clearance, forward facing seat clamp slot and the bosses for mud guards.0
-
Pretty much all centre around mud really.0

Yeah, I'm going for the 20.5 frame. I currently ride a 21" frame. Somebody told me it was too big so I tried a 19 inch, but I just felt too cramped, all hunched up. I have plenty of clearance on the top bar. And there was a lot of seatpost needed for the 19"0 -
Just out of interest, how tall are you and what's your inside leg?0

6'1 and 33" inside leg (i think)0 -
Id usually say avoid anything that's nuclear green but the core looks really good!
Im looking to but either the core 20 or the altitude and have also been comparing it to the rock hopper and the orange g2.
Although it might seem stupid Im very sceptical of all the specialized own parts the Rockhopper has. There hard to compare to say Shimano, Hope or Hayes breaks for example and would be harder to replace.
At the moment i ride a Pinnacle tent peak which is also made by a British company for British riders and iv never had a problem with it.0 -

I was looking over the same lines - looking at this months mbr dirty dozen test results to help me choose.
I saw that the Voodoo Buntu got good reviews and an offer at work give me discount at (wait for it) halfords.
Howverer they are not in stock yet.
But speaking to a very helpful chap he directed me to an 08 version for 299 and a 08 version of the Bokor (1 step up) for £410.
It has Bomber forks, slx mech, Hayes stroker disc brakes. Sounds good but as a complete beggining with MTB I could literally be told anything.
Has anyone had any experince of Voodoo/Bokor and does the spec sound comparable to the Rockhopper bering in mind with discount the 08 Bokor will be £180 cheaper.
Thanks in advance.0 -
I'm picking up the Core 20 middle of next week. I had a test ride and it just felt right. IAll the components seem top too.
Can't wait!0
