Hi all,

I know that this may be tempting fate this 'summer',but what is your preferred method of keeping the sun off the back of the neck, apart from long hair that is.Also, does anyone recommend any sun block that doesn't slide straight off at the first sign of sweat? I have gotta say that I dont really like the usual greasy feel to sun block but realise that it's a neccessary evil.

Regards,

  • I uhmed & ahhed over whether to put sunblock on my legs and arms yesterday. I wish I had. Bright red arms and top of legs :(

I normally use the waterproof factor 30 or 50 suncreams and find that as long as I put loads on, I don't get burned. Last years Rydale Rumble - 6 hrs in searing heat and I was not burned despite the sweating. You can always carry one of the small tubes to reapply later in the ride if it's coming off.

My sunblock is factor 50, quite thick and doesn't run. Good stuff, cos I have getting sunburnt. Anywhere. Put enough on and you'll be ok I have always found.

waterproof sunblock is the key here.
i used to use some vaseline above my eyebrows to stop the sweat from running into my eyes. heven't had to do that in the last few years though!

Use Riemans P20. It's strange stuff, a liquid rather than a cream or gel, and you only need to apply it once (about an hour before you go out in the sun). It's absorbed into the skin, so sweat doesn't make it run into your eyes. Just be careful though, only having to apply once is great, but if you miss a bit......ouch

Care to share what sunblock you use

Someone suggested Piz Buin All Day Long. Anybody tried this one?

+1 for P20 - it's good stuff although you might want to top up the very vunerable areas if you're going to be doing really long rides in high summer.

That's what I use on the summer holiday. Never usually need suntan lotion any other time  but this year is going to be so different isn't it :?:

Well yes apparently it's gonna be a scorcher, and if it is, well I shall just up the factor, put loads on and enjoy the sun :)

I'd suggest a Buff scarf or similar, preferably with a jersey with a collar. I've done quite a bit of touring in sunny climes and I find that wearing it pirate style, making sure it falls down over the back of the neck is the best overall solution. I find that with cream it gets too messy and/or, there is always a missing bit that burns.

A Casquette, worn backwards. Has the added advantage of making you look unbelievably cool.
