Prompted by the article about Rob Spedding http://www.bikeradar.com/blogs/article/im-firing-up-the-grifter-21723 firing up his Raleigh Grifter to do a circuit of Donnington Park, it got me thinking about old bikes I've owned, and old bikes in general. That thinking got me to surfing, ebay and the web in general.

I've always thought the Raleigh Burner was pretty cool and my old Grifter (the black and gold one) brings back fond memories for me.

Also saw this Burner on ebay..cool or stool?!

I think the problem is that you were maybe just maybe a little too succinct.

Yep. Have to agree. The Burner is a cool bike and they still feel quite nippy and quick even now.

Out of interest it used to be said that by putting the mag wheels in the freezer you could fix any cracks. Is this true of myth?!

i thought the freezer thing was to straighten them? we should email mythbusters and get them to do it!!

hmmm maybe I cant really remember the actual details, I just remember the words "Mag", "Wheel" and "Freezer". Could just have easily been a receipe for plastic flavoured ice pops I suppose.

Freezing mag wheels only straightens them, it doesn't repair cracks.

True . . . Its just a way to sell OLD crap to people who look back with rose tinted spectacles ( Possibly retro style ones as worn by John Lennon )

People label stuff retro to make it appeal, Old music is not referred to as retro ?

''Now thats what I call retro 1'' sounds pretty sh*t, They are labelled as they are ''Golden Oldies''

The clue being old . . . Screw old I want NEW

    !!! Rant Over !!!

The only cool retro bikes are the '98 GT Zaskar and the '98 GT LTS 1, both in Ball Burnished finish.

    That's how we roll.

'98 was a good year for GT, eh?

I like the square tubed pace frames - I think Mint Sauce rode one back in the day. The yo eddy fat chances and klein attitudes were the bikes I dreamt of owning back then! Their paint schemes were awesome too!
  • Finished doing my GT RTS up recently, a real nice frame when set up correctly. It's a shame that they are suffering weakness from metal fatigue now, particularly around the BB. A good ride & nice to look at imo, but I'm on my 3rd frame now!

I'd still like a muddy fox courier. Thing is, actually riding these things offroad is great fun, and also helps remind you (if you need reminding) how brilliant modern bikes are.

Raliegh striker was cool, followed by an upgrade to the grifter.
Those fake shock absorbers were smart!

The grifter weighed more than my car now though!
