hi , have been looking at sealed gear cables for my trance x. they sound good, the review of the gore ones look good, but are they worth the £40 (could buy a lot of cable for that!)and do they last ?
has anyone tried other makes of sealed cables they can recommend or not?
thanks

is there anyway you can run continuous outers? this is the best way to have fully sealed cables as no matter what the design, there is a route in for filth at the deraileur0

just use stainless inners and outer and change them as needed."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

thanks for your replies fellas,
sheepsteeth - dont reckon id be able to mate, as the cable stops look too narrow at their rears to be able to fit inner and outer cables through.
nick - do you mean normal cables (like what the bike came with)? that was my other option cause their cheap to replace. probably the best option if i can't run continuous outers/inners. just a ballache changing them so often!
cheers

sounds like you need to run interupted cables but with a little bit of maintenace, id keep the ones you have, sealed cables are tosh.0

well normal may not be stainless."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Ok, now sommat from someone who has them fitted to a bike!
Got Flying Snakes fitted to my Reign- fitted from new in October. Brilliant, had full length on my On-One (and still do!) and the interrupted cables with sealed cables are just as good. Never touched them, no maintenance on the cables needed at all. Crisp clear shifts, no trouble down shifting- nothing. And possibly better than full length as there is less compression over a few small lengths compared to a full length- barely noticable if at all TBH on that front tho'...
As for dirt ingress? What are you on about ST? The cable has to finish somewhere near the mechs, and is no different in the "ingress" issue as a full length outer- probably less as the inners sheath is a tighter fit than a normal outer.0 -
you're not the only one who has fitted sealed cables, y'winner.
my point was supposed to be that all systems allow filth in at the derailleur, continuous cables only let it in at the derailleur.
if you have had success, fair enough, i have found them to be too expensive for the pretty tonk performance when compared to full outers. for the folk who cant fit full outers, i could begin to see the benefits i spose, but i dont really see them being too much better than normal cables which are well maintained.0 -
No filth in my cable, sad enough to have just checked as well!
A tad more expensive I'll grant, but at a once off cost, and in comparison to the cost of the bike....
Still think they are worth the money, even the guys at the LBS have commented on how good it shifts even after all this time (what 6 and a bit months?) Had far more issues with the fork! But thats another thread...0 -
hey thanks for the posts,
nick - i will look into ss cables
sheepsteeth - from experience you found little if no benefit
and ratty - sounds like you've had great success with the flying snakes
hmmmmmm :? what to do!!
has anyone else any experience, good or bad with this type of cable?
thanks again
