get a helmet and smack him upside the head (not too hard, that's child abuse) and say to him "If you were wearing the helmet I wouldn't have been able to do that, and if you fell off it'd feel alot worse."

it may sound sill but when i was a nipper i only started wearing a helmet when i got a good looking one, get him a plain looking p*ss pot lid and wait for MBUK to give away stickers, then he can create his own style helmet and as such he may be more inclined to wear it! also show him some pictures of guys like cam mcaul or chris smith with their stickered lids and that may help too.

I bet he had a mid air brown trouser incident there.

nuh... apparently that guy was fine after that incident.

Theres a pic of a guy upside down about 2 inches from the floor with his face about to take the full force of the fall.

I have just started to walk unassisted after breaking my back over 6 weeks ago. I definately would not be here if it were not for my helmet.

I would not use shock treatment to persude him, it doesn't work. You need to show him that ALL pro riders wear helmets, and you can't be good if you don't wear one.

Agreed, let him watch Roam or one of the NWD videos and gently point out that all the pros wear helmets....

smash his face in, twice daily whether he wears a helmet or not. this is the way to raise all children.
  • Give him loads of sanctimonious lectures about wearing helmets, help him decide that cyclists are all up-themselves wankers and he'd far rather play XBOX, Help him on the path to becoming yet another junior lardling and feel that fabulous frisson of guilt when he drops dead of an obesity-related heart attack at 35.

Or you could, you know, just be happy that he's riding a bike, doing something healthy and active and outdoorsy.

Or as a mate of mine used to say - "Children are the future. Which is why we must stop them. Now."

  • If only he could have seen the tree that landed on my head today (ok branch but it was a beast)

I still cant quite belive it, i stopped for 2 mins under a tree to scrape some mud from my cleats and in that time a big branch snapped off the tree and landed on my head  it dropped from quite a hight too as it really smacked my neck down.

Lesson learnt today - always wear your helmet even when your not riding :D

To be honest a seven year old should be told that NO Helmet = No bike

Why should there be a need to show him pictures like this.

You'll be letting him become a funny eater next.

Its difficult to convince youngsters to wear helmets as many of the cyclists you see on a daily basis are roadies. You very rarely see road cyclists wearing helmets unless they are in a competition and they only tend to wear them then becasue the UCI regulations make it mandatory! Most mountain bikers i meet wear them but by their nature you don't see them riding on the road very often.
Statistics don't really back up the claims that helmets save lives or prevent serious injury either.
From my point of veiw i always wear a helmet. I had one serious crash last year that would have been far worse if i'd not had my lid on. As it was i broke my arm which was bad enough!

because he only stays with me every few weekends so if i can get him to make his own mind up that helmets are cool then he will wear it when im not there hopefully.

its not about giving him lectures or trying to shock him, hes a very clever 7 year old so will make his own mind up. ive also been through a few of m magazines and showed him some red bull x games clips so hes seen all the pros wearing them

    cheers for all the input

right just need to persuade him that Crewe Alexandra are a far better team than Man UTD lol ...any ideas ??? ha ha

really? All roadies I've seen wear helmets, and all mountain bikers. Pretty much the only group of cyclists i see who don't usually wear helmets are casual cyclists, the ones who who are clearly going from a to b, or just pottering around on the pavement.

I knew it was you that had it!
  • Do you busy-bodies go round telling people to wear helmets in the bathroom too?
