Yeah I've had that before, people all padded up on uber good bikes and ride my gran lol.
  • I hate to see good bikes wasted !!

Without blowing ones trumpet (ok I will) these lads were on new bikes mines 5 yr old with a knackered rear sprocket worn chain seized front mech cable and knackered front forks and I still nailed them with there shiny new fox forks ! Im jealous yeh but if you got that kind of kit you should know how to use it !!

To many people don't use their bikes to anything close to the full potential.
Blowing my trumpet (after a few beers  0) I'm glad I'm not one of these said people. Although I'm not sure my bike is either lol.

We got pwnd by an old dude on a horrible mid-90s Trek hardtail last night. And then my mech (which probably cost more than his entire bike, and possibly his entire house from the looks of it) fell apart in protest. Hopefully he's not going to post in here

  • i have the added satisfaction of being a bit of a bloater but im much fitter than i look, my bikes good but its not a stand out bike by any means, and i love shooting past folk on hills and any other section of trail, where its possible, and its even better when its folk on these awesome bikes, who have clearly splashed the coin but havent quite reached the bikes ability.

    but thats just me........
i spent all me money on whisky and beer!!!
  • Your bikes a beast - worst thing was I had already ridden to to hamsterley at 5 in the morning done a lap of the black and on my second go round caught these guys up and one said "wait til we get in the woods and i'll show you what im all about" well when I got to the bottom I had time for a banana and time to pump my tyre up (slow puncture) before they caught up ha ha !! If he never tried to talk the talk I wouldnt care a less but he had the nerve to say my forks were shit even though I butt rap*d them through the technical sections ha ha what a tool !!

  • i got gandalf'd on my way into work tonight, i take it fairly easy and its not alot of climbing involved but this old dude, maybe 60 year old, possibly older, just zipped past me, on a short hill, i tried to keep up with him atleast but got nowhere near him, admittedly i was on 2.1 high rollers with fairly low psi and he was on proper road tyres but still...........

Your kidding, he said that lol. What a plank, good on you for showing him who's boss.
  • Yes mate I couldnt believe it - one of them let me have a go on one of there bikes at the end of the ride he said " can you feel the difference compared to yours ? " Im too polite to be nasty but honest to god I rode with them on the second section and went third in line and they were holding me up !!! Some people............ You shouldnt diss other peoples rides to start with but if your gonna do it make sure you can ride your own lol !!!!!

Very true, should have got to the front on his bike and done one lol. Then wait at the car park to see his face. Priceless
  • nothing wrong with being confident in your ability, but no sense in commenting about someone else on a trail, the first time id be stupid enough to make a comment and it would be someone like oli beckinsale out for a jaunt on a red route, and we all know how that would end up

  • You know all joking aside I started to get on a bit of a downer on the way home coz I lost my job and moneys tight at the moment and I was thinking "god I would love some new forks, new back shock, new bike etc" coz the way they were going on but then I thought no I love my old proven warrior and Its worth more than the sum of its parts - especially when im at the helm ha ha - screw 'em !!!! - so yeah im proud of that day !!

F**k em, your bike ain't that bad tbh. Much better than the one I started on when I became a born again rider that's for sure. Job front might be a shitter now but it wont be for ever. Don't let people put you down.
It's not what you use it's how you use it....
  • exactly, and if you were to get a better bike, you'd lose the satisfaction of ripping the arse out of folks on their couple-of-grand-future-clothes-horses, while your out on your *wreck. (*not what i actually think of your bike)

fair enough. But if we start from a standpoint thatt the recent explosion in trail centre development is genrally accepted as being a positive thing, creating jobs and generating income in rural areas across the country (some of which, around south Wales in particular, are in the most deprived areas of the country), then surely the more people that are attracted into this great sport, the better?

theb surely, attracting people into this pastime with large amounts of disposable income can also be a good thing. Think about how MOST of the MTB publications regularly carry features on new bikes based around specific price points for people looking to buy. I would say that it's natural for anyone coming into the sport to have a figure in mind that they can reasonably afford to pay before they even start looking.

Are we saying that people need to "earn their spurs" by buying something well under what they can afford just so they don't get branded with the "all the gear, no idea label ?"

Surely this attitude will only alienate these people. I personally started on a £100 hardtail with elastomer forks and caliper brakes but as my experience/ability/personal income has increased, so has the quality and range of the bikes I ride. That doesnt mean that I should begrudge somebody elses ability to go straight out and spend 2.5k on something I aspire to ride as their first bike.

A friend of mine came with me to Llandegla recently for a first taste of mountain biking. He is now awaiting delivery of his first bike, a Lapierre Zesty at just over 2 grand. He is an adult and can afford it, so what's the problem?

    rant done

It is good, I used to love it. But i'm getting it the other way now. People are trying to have a pop at me when they see me on my Scale because it's in the over £3k all the gear no idea category. Trouble is i've got the legs and skills to match the bike

So as a general rule, don't judge a rider by the bike he/she rides. I'm just glad I started off cheap and basic, got my grounding, got looked down upon etc, because I will never do it to anybody, even if they are on a supermarket special.

Not forgetting of course that when some of these guys decide after a few months and not many miles that MTB is not really for them, and that £3k bike may have been a waste, you could potentially bag yourself a bargain on Fleabay.

When I first started riding, it was on a cheap bike. But tbh, I can completely understand why someone getting into the sport might want to buy the best bike they can afford. Ok, so buying a full carbon, full XTR, full-sus £3k beast might not make them a better rider, but it would certainly make life easier than trying to climb/descend on a 600lb rust-o-matic 5000. Leading to them enjoying the experience more, meaning they are more likely to stick at it and improve. Plus, (generally speaking) more expensive bikes are going to last longer.

If I could afford to buy an Ascari, I would. Would it make me a better driver than my old Landy does? No,course not. Would I ever use it to it's full potential? No,course not. But I'm an adult, it's my bloody money and it's nice to have nice things if you can.

Of course, all that being said, [Smug] I did pass a guy on a Carbon Scale the other week....going uphill......on my Full-sus :D [/Smug]

Oh, and I would NEVER slate someone elses ride just because it wasnt as good/expensive as mine. People ride whatever they can afford or feel comfortable on, and it's got Fk all to do with me or anyone else. That kind of snobbery has no place in this sport imo, glad you stuffed him Geordie, and chin up lad, you'll soon find a new job, best of luck chap.

it is the best feeling to come up behind some rider on singletrack, shout to get him to pull over, and then watch his face as he notices your on a £400 hardtail!
    I like bikes and stuff
