Complicated cyclescheme dilema.

I've already got an Orange 5 AM but have the opportunity to go on the cyclescheme.
I also have £500 from the sale of my older hardtail and I have a Trek Bruiser to sell.
So I have a minimum of 1k and a max of say 1.6k and I am at my whits end not knowing how to spend it lol.
Here's the self made confusion -
1) Do I spend it all on 1 Hardtail with the best parts I can get for the money.
2) Buy a Titanium or very light frame (if scheme will allow) and use whats left of the cash for parts.
3) Buy another full suss but a more XC based one
4) Go Singlespeed and blow the rest of the cash on my Orange 5
Dunno how best to spend it ?
cheerz

You sound desperate, lol!
It's awful having money burning a hole in your pocket, isn't it...
Sorry - I can be of no use to you - your comment just amused me...
Good luck with your dilemma!Ned Flanders: “You were bicycling two abreast?”

Are you basing the max on topping up a £1k voucher with cash?
Very few shops will allow you to do this unless it's one you're particularly friendly with and they'll mark the bike as only costing £1k despite costing more.
Same goes for trying to obtain a frame. Most shops will say no.0 -

I've found that most shops are fine with you spending more than £1000 by topping it up with cash as they want the sale. I did this with my bike, I asked a few shops and not one refused. What it does do is create a problem with split ownership. ie You own part of the bike and your employer owns part of the bike (Until you pay it off and make your final payment to purchase it). If there was ever any disagreement over ownership it may be difficult to sort out.
You may have more problems with a frame as technically the bike needs to be rideable or else how are you going to ride it to work? Really this is just a technicality though and if the shop is willing then why not?
Of the options, I'd go for 1 or 2.0 -
all the shops i enquired about a bike on the cycle scheme couldnt give a monkeys what the voucher was used for. ie £500 on a frame, £100 on a cycle carrier and £200 on bits and bobs. one lad at our fire station put extar cash to his so it can be done as well
the cyclescheme voucher is basically just like a gift voucher for that shop
oh and as for your original question, id spend £1k on a hardail then spend the rest on a couple of cycling holidays0 -
Thx for the replies, I think option 1 is probably the easiest and that way I can spend all the other cash on some bling and/or upgrades for my Orange 5 or start slowly making an SS outta some ebay or second user frame.
Question now is what hardtail to buy for 1k thats best value for money in these dodgy financial times.Orange 5 AM

I think it is worth pointing out that any bikes and parts got on the cycle scheme do not belong to you - you effectively rent them off your employer.0

I would buy a bike to ride to work on (single speed if you like), save your cash for the Orange 5. If you commute a lot it is worth having something fit for purpose. You could get a cheaper commuter and get some expensive lights to reach the 1K limit? I think lights and helmet can go on the scheme.
...I'm a hypocrit though because in reality I got a 1k road bike on it and then bought a cross S/S (a Spesh Tricross) for commuting for under £300. Funnily enough the Tricross is now my favorite bike!'Happiness serves hardly any other purpose than to make unhappiness possible' Marcel Proust.0
