so am I right in thinking the climb at penhydd is reletavly easy due to the fire roads? How does it compare to the climbs at whites or say cwmcarn?

reason I ask is im taking the other half to trails for the 1st time and she is quiet inexperienced.

i took my inexperienced partner as she struggled with anything more than the flat riverside loop. Inexperienced is very wooly, Id check out the videos on youtube to get an idea.

Skyline I thought was long and boring with a good decent
I enjoyed the wall although the climb was a slog
Climb to Whytes / W2 is great fun but pretty hard.
Penhydd is a lot of fun

Im "unfit" but rode all the areas rides within 6 days with most coming in on the bottom end of the time estimates printed on the direction cards.

    i rode the skyline yesterday
i was prepared this time, did it on my giant trance
had 2 litres of fluid and some light snackes wich i stopped for twice for about 10 mins each
i paced myself steadily using my heart rate monitor (kept below 75 % HR) and it was quite an easy ride in the end
it took 3 hrs 31 including the stops, but i gotta say it was at least and hour and a half of boredom (there were a couple of diversions tho), fire roads bore the hell out of me, i may aswell have been on a cyclocross bike or on a road ride, thank god i had my heart rate monitor to distract me lol, as well its the accomplishment i guess.

the W2 is much more fun, its only the last couple descents on the skyline line that are any good and worth putting the seat down for some play time, i think the wall has the best descents

did it a fornight ago only diversion there was at Joyrider but since the 15th a huge section has been closed due to harvesting

personally loved it felt it gave a taste of all the other afan routes
I wear Lycra because I like the way it feels
  • Completed that mammoth Skyline endurance challange they call a trail last Saturday.
    Near enough finished me
Way too long for my first visit there, but will be returning to do the others.
Here's an image for those that have ridden it...................................................................

FBFW, it's not all like that  , it is a hard ride IMO, particularly with that final 6km descent at the end when all you want is cake.
It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.

    I've bought a new bike....ouch - result
    Can I buy a new bike?...No - no result
