my bike has developed an annoying problem, during wet and muddy days the chain whilst peddling will suddenly just lock and not turn, i then have to reverse pedal to free chain, i know this is due to mud and crap but even after clean all the mud off with my camel back it still does it! it has a brand new rear mech and cables so thats not the issue, i wonder if anyone else gets this problem and know of why its happening, i hate gears!!! o and the bike is a 2007 commencal meta 5.52

take your rear wheel out and then take the casset off have a good clean if all else fails and it keeps doing it then you need to look at your free hub.

Chain Suck, some bikes are afflicted more than others. You used to be able to buy anti chainsuck gadgets, I don't have one (don't have the problem), but google is your friend.

How old are the chainrings? Chainsuck gets worse as they get a bit worn.

It'll be chainsuck caused by worn chain rings and a stretched chain. Rear cassette will also probably be knackered, might not work well with a new unstretched chain.
It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.

    I've bought a new bike....ouch - result
    Can I buy a new bike?...No - no result

I had this annoying problem with my bike. All was fine until I was a few miles into a ride and as soon as I was riding up hill and putting some pressure on the pedals. I found that my chain had stretched slightly and was therefore too long. I put the bike into the smallest chainring at the front and the smallest on the cassette and removed any sag. Never had the problem again.
