What's your average speed???

OK people, so what's your usual average speed over your normal offroad ride :?:

I'm not looking for "my best is 52mph" etc etc - just what you usually achieve on an average ride offroad. Me and my mates go out every weekend and usually hit an average of 10mph overall. That's taking it fairly leisurely (as there are a couple of new riders in the group), not pushing ourselves like we're in a race. We generally do just over 30 miles (99% offroad) over 3 hours - which is a nice ride - you know you've done it but you're not incapable of moving afterwards either.

Just wondered what everyone else did on average.

I generally do 25-30 miles in about 3 hours so 10mph is pretty good by my standards. My best was a 12-mile ride in less than an hour on my Proflex.

    Depends entirely where you ride...

9mph average around Cwmcarn is pretty fierce yet doesn't sound like it.

On my local loop 12 or 13mph is more likely...

True - weather conditions too - sloppy mud and a head wind - lovely!

Hard to say on my local loop riding for 1.5 hours i can do 15 MPH
up in the dales its about 10 mph
and round dalby its about 12-13 mph

Off road its all down to condtions of the trail and the high you gain that sets the speed.

About an hour, twice a week.
More numbers than that and i start to get obsessed by them and lose some of the pleasure of riding.
  • Mine's 9 but measured on a garmin.

I've always wondered, would it detect the small twists and turns of singletrack if it's swichbacks every few meters? For example you go 400 meters but with the berms and switchbacks etc its a little further, the gps would have to be massivly accurate to not just do a fairly staright line to work out the speed.

I run too and there was a similar analogy for running on a cruise ship while its moving.

I'm just hoping I could add a few MPH if I had a sensor computor!

Again, depends on where I am riding. For my evening loop, It's a nice 15miles, almost all offroad nothing too challenging, average 10mph, or just over if it's nice and dry.
For my fave weekend run (the one in my sig), it's more like an average of 8mph over about 40miles. This however, does not take into account the time spent with the front wheel stopped, resting, opening gates, chatting to other riders I come across, or on the deck having fallen off (which happens lots).

There's so many factors to work this one out...

Main one (for me, at least!!) is how many times I have to scrape myself off trees and pick myself off the floor. Again....

    12 inches

    Locally 15mph - Usually 20-21 miles of singletrack/fireroad (50/50) with around 1400ft climbing

In the peaks 8-9mph over 20 miles with 5000ft ish climbing

On our 6 mile off-road time trial course it's 16mph ave

So it's horses for courses really, I do ride like a loon though bouncing off my near max heart rate all the time. Typically I average 170-172 bpm out of a possible 189 bpm.

It should pick that up. My Garmin is accurate enough to show which side of the road I cycle on> Biggest issue with a GPS though is that it only measures horizontal distance, doesn't take into account vertical distance travelled. My bike computer reading distance from wheel turns always reads higher than the Garmin.

Oh average speed is around 9 mph but it is very dependant on location, conditions etc. etc.
It's easier to ask for forgiveness than for permission.

    I've bought a new bike....ouch - result
    Can I buy a new bike?...No - no result
  • With ya, so I dont get an extra few MPH? :?

I've thought about the verticle distance thing too, came to the conclusion it wasn't that large a figure. I forget the exact calculation for it but it was only around 2 metres over a 500 metre 1 in1 climb.

12-13 mph generally around Noth Notts so not too hilly. However, just started riding with a super fit mate and recently covered 32 miles at an average of 17 mph. I was totalled but my mate was ready for the same again, the show off.

According to my Garmin, my moving average is about 10.5mph on forest tracks
In places like Swinley it's a lot less, 6 - 8mph due to the tight sections and uphill pedaling (and pushing)

probably about 15mph. Did 6 miles yesterday lunch time in 30 minutes, but didn't really know where I was going and kept missing markers.

I seem to average 10-12mph and that's on a single speed where I spin out at 16-18mph... but I am so looking forward to getting some gears on my bike because then I can pace myself a lot better and I hope the strength gained from single speeding will translate into higher and more sustainable mph.. we will see..

I can't believe people do 15mph on average off -road, that's about my usual average on a road bike and I'm not too unfit - but it is the Yorkshire Dales where there is a lot of climbing. I find that off-road I average about 8mph on a normal off-road ride. And the Garmin never lies!

Here's some of my polar data, 4 different rides - An offroad time trial, singletrack training ride, peaks ride and a road ride. Terrain varies average speed a lot as you can see.

fairly flat round these parts (to understate the fact quite a lot ! ) and out on a mixed surface route (50/50 tarmc and dirt) with my wife (whos only been on MTBs for a couple of months) we average around 11/12mph

i used to do a similarly flat and similarly mixed surface route of about 18 miles in an hour or so

  • I have just been out for an hour and averaged 13.5 mph along a reasonably flat section of the trans pennine trail. I was pushing myself on my hybrid bike so I am pretty happy with this being 42 and 14st 7lb.
