From personal experience, I find that base training is great for increasing the distance I can ride, and intervals are great at improving my power & speed.

So, I guess it depends on your goals, but for most people, I would say a combination of the two would be best.

I think base training and intervals should be done alternately. One day you can do base training to improve your endurance and then the next day you do interval training to exercise the lung muscles and power output.

It's important that you stretch before and after riding so that you're recovery period is quicker and eat carbs and protein within 30 minutes after training.

Depends on what you mean by base training.

Base to me means a period of riding that prepares the body for some solid aerobic development work. It is commonly used when someone is starting out after a long break or hasn't done a lot of riding (compared to what is intended).

It might only be a week or two needed, for others much longer. Sorts out the body getting used to riding again, being in the saddle for periods of time, making sure that all the moving parts are accustomed to riding in that position, working out any niggles etc. How much is needed depends on the individual, riding history etc
