broken chain

im a bit new to do it yourself bike repair usually using my local bike shop for most jobs. today though my chain broke and, as im planning a bit of tourig in the summer i thought id better fid out how to repair this. i have a Specialised Allez Elite road bike. Can anyone help with advice on tools needed and how to make a repair that would keep me on the road should this happen in the middle of nowhere

    Well you just need a chain splitter and some spare links. The chain splitter will cost about a tenner, then it's just a case of splitting the chain, and putting it back together. If you need extra links I think you can buy them, but usually you need to shorten a brand new chain, so you can keep those in your saddle bag with the splitter. Certain chains require different pins for joining, so might be worth telling us what setup you're running so we can give more accurate advice.
  • It depends what type of chain you have. If it's a Shimano or Campag one (I assume the former with the Allez Elite as I have the Allez Sport) you need a chain rivet tool compatable with the chain. You then pop out one of the rivets taking out a damaged section and then reconnect using a connect pin (type depends on make of chain and speed).

    I personally recommend chains by Sram. They are Shimano compatible and are connected by something called a Powerlink which requires no tools to separate or connect and I have ran them faultless for years. You will still need a chain tool to take out any damaged section though.
