Not sure if this is the right place to ask but thought someone might be able to help. Im just about to get my 1st road bike this weekend, and will also be getting some shoes

I have been looking at getting the Shimano R086, but I am now thinking about getting triathlon shoes. May main goal is to try triathlons, but I will want to get some main bike fitness first. My question is do I just get the R086's and get used to riding and enter my first few triathlons with these, knowing that transition wont be as quick, and possibly getting tri shoes as well if I get on well with triathlons or do I just take the plunge and just go for the tri shoes straight away.

Is there much difference in the actual shoes, the fit and the feel, or is it just the ease of getting them on, and is it much of a hassle using road shoes for a triathlon?
Hope that makes sense.

I use road shoes, but I only do long distance tris so transition time isnt that important.

Tri shoes will be slightly quicker to get on, and often the straps are the other way to road shoes to enable you to clip the shoes into the pedals and fasten them on the move.
They are also airier than road shoes - to help water drain out after the swim, and tris only take place in summer anyway.

I would go for normal road shoes really as you will use them on the road 95% of the time, and maybe only race 5% of the time. You may lose a couple of seconds getting them on, but its no big deal in the scheme of things.

Try these for fit = velcro straps are easy to get in and out of.

Thanks for the reply, I will probs go for the road shoes then.

Cheers for the link, it has given me somethin else to think about, and another option. just wandering if a velcro strap might be better, or quicker than a ratchet strap like you said. I will have to browse the internet more I guess, lol

I would buy the shoes in person to make sure you get the fit and comfort. Velcro is easier as what can go wrong ? I've lost bits from my ratchets in the past.

I was going to go to my LBS this weekend to try some on and make sure I get the right size, just wanted to get some reviews on the internet. Not really something I want to guess the size on. Thanks for the response
