Chain trouble...

During the ride to work this morn I noticed my chain seemed to be slipping. I had a look during the ride, but didnt notice anything obvious. However when I got to work I had a closer look, and noticed a very guilty looking chain link.

This chain link seems to have seized, and doesnt move very freely one way, and seems to get 'locked' in a certain position. This is causing problems at the Jockey wheels, as the chain is not running smoothly around them, the chain reaches the first jockey wheel and because its seized it kind of snaps into place causing slippage.

Ive tried to clean said link as best as i could, and put some wd40 and 3-in-1 oil (its the best ive got in work!) but its still not moving freely enough. I'll take the chain off tonight and soak it in some degreaser and see what happens then,

Its probable that a bit of grit has worked its way in there, but could it also mean i need a new chain??? (the bike is only about 6 weeks old).

Thanks in advance guys!

try freeing up the link but if it still doesent work just remove the link, the chain should be fine even with a link or two removed, so long as you remember not to go big ring to big ring, which you shouldnt do anyway.

Think ive got a spare powerlink so ill clean it first and see how it goes...

Can you put more than 1 powerlink on a chain???

Yeah, it'll be fine. I suppose you'll just have to watch the second link doesnt come undone and get lost if/when you ever remove the chain using the first one. If you see what I mean!

Yeah, it'll be fine mechanically, I'm sure you'd be fine with a chain where every other link was a powerlink. I just meant if you take the chain off you'll lose the tension that keeps the link together, so risk it falling apart, like if you clean it by putting in a jar of cleaner and shaking, youd have to take all the powerlinks out or risk pouring them down the drain!
