If I can get around that nasty bend in the middle of the really steep part without having to put my foot down, I will then get up the next bit. I will have enough gears

Fiddlesticks. I was thinking of doing this one, but I thought it was later in the year for some reason (not about this weekend). Looks proper tough - with Fleet Moss and Park Rash both the hard way could this be the toughest Dales sportive? Are there any other events that go up Park Rash?

The dales grimpeur audax, the weekend after, goes up it as well.

the 210km audax is a true brute, starting in pately bridge and going up church lane in the first 400m, greenhow, malham tarn, park rash, fleet moss, jordens moss and other horrors I can't remember the name of.

I'm out on Saturday. I'm prepared for a real battle to get up Park Rash. Never mind, I'll have my trusty 34x29 gear!

Depends on your definition of spinning!

I climbed it in 2006 using a 30x26 gear (2% lower than 34x29) and I certainly wouldn't call what I did 'spinning'... More like 'desperately hoping that some part on my bike would fail under the strain to give me an excuse to get off and walk'!

I did manage to get up the brute to a spontaneous round of applause from a couple of families who had been standing, watching my agonised eye-bulging efforts from the roadside car park higher up. 8)

It sounds like a really great route - one for me to have a go at when I'm fit enough to climb properly again. Have a good ride folks.

I'm riding, but just the 80 miles option for me. Really looking forward to it now.

The thought of it bothers me a bit, too, but then you know that Steve, because we're riding it together. I don't know what you've got to worry about, though, you've got six and a half years on me (I collect my bus-pass in 18 months time! ) and you've got more miles under you belt this year than I have.

What's the worst that can happen - we have to walk the hardest 50 metres of the climb? I'm not saying that will happen, but it's no big deal in my view. How many people walk up Hardknott on the FWC? Quite a lot, I imagine, but I wouldn't think any less of them for doing so.

From what I remember, it is really steep at the bottom, and then slackens off to merely very steep for about 500 metres until you get to the car park. That's about the first place that you'd stand a decent chance of getting going again if you have to dismount. So, what you wrote, but a half kilometre walk...

    Enjoy it!

Park Rash is VERY steep to begin with but the rest of the climb is difficult. Its the worst climb of the route IMO and jusy happens to be the last real killer as well. Good luck everybody.

I'm on this one, but just the 80 miles. I'd love to do the 100, but I need to be able to walk on the Sunday (gardening, decorating, shopping .....) Too little stamina, that's my problem - I need more hilly miles.

The weather forecast is looking good. I may need sun cream, which is not something I've said often this year.

    I can't wait!
I should get out more (on the bike)

getting a bit breezy though according to metoffice (SW winds 13 mph, gusts 25 +), could be a factor on Fleet moss into the wind, but then tail wind all way back.I`ll see how I feel at Hawes whether 100 or 80!
    enjoy! :D

How Steep is VERY ? as bad as rosedale chimney or hardnott ?

I'm up for the 100 but have never ridden the Dales , only moors around Whitby. So I'm tryng to gauge on the toughness of ths one. I did the Rydale rumble 116miler last year , but it take me a long time.

    Cheers
