Hi,
Just noticed that the wire cable that leads to the front deraileur and runs underneath the downtube on my rockhopper comp is loose. I'd guess theres about one and a half inches of play in it - surely this is not correct?
The back deraileur wire cable is taut.
Am I taking it back to Halfords or is it a simple operation? if indeed anything is wrong

no - not as of yet - just seems strange that the rear derailleur is so tight and front one so loose0

That sounds like cable slack, change it up a few cogs and it shoujld go tight.
I would hazard a guess that your chain is on one of the big rear cogs and the smallest front cog...0
