Just been in and been offered a deal to join, what do we all pay for gym memberships?

Been offered £45 a month less 10% taking it to £40.50 for access to all clubs at any time. The guy is also going to throw in loads of other free stuff. They have 73 clubs nationwide so can use the one near me at home and one near work as well

Sounds like reasonably good deal to me. I used to pay more than that for virgin active and currently pay £45 fo my squash club, but that includes all court fees

They come to my work place once a month trying to flog deals. No one has any money there so its a wasted effort.

None of that gym stuff ever interested me tbh. I have my own weights and the road is my gym. Plus my job keeps me fit.

If it's the same one, a bit less than you, but I have the off-peak membership.

There's a recession on - one of the first things people will drop are gym memberships. I'd have thought you could play all the local gyms off each other and knock a few more quid off.

Correct, gym's are desperate, many are fighting for survival.

The gym I went to (don't bother anymore, they bore me sh1tless) charged £38/month ... they are now doing offers at £20/month.

If you really must go to a gym, push them for more discount.

I despise gyms, and that's coming from someone who used to manage the corporate membership team for a large chain. Gym sales people (IME) are set hefty targets and many are based on numbers joined as opposed to £'s of membership sold (daft I know), so haggle haggle haggle and check the CANX policy as that's where they'll try and shaft you.

Don't need to now as we have showers at work but in my last job I was at the Broadgate Club for £50 pm which was about a third of the normal rate. A bit excessive for a shower, but I can't stand places where you don't get fluffy towels, robes, free perfume and pretty girls in starched white uniforms in case you need a quick rub down. Saves time on waxing too. 8)

Yeah, I'm about to get out of my gym membership - it's really very pricey and I don't enjoy using it - rather be on the bike. And we have a very nice shower room in the office.

i used to use the gym but when love of cycling got greater realised id rather spend hard earned on some home weights and on the roads

i cant stand gyms now as they seem more bout making money than helping people exericese and i used to be a personal trainer

i used to join the JJB fitness for £37 peak-time incuding use of swimming and all classes, plus 10% off by showing the membership card with shopping at JJB. but quit that as it is far away from my flat and by the time i got home and just couldn't be bother cycling/getting the bus/walking there.... end up only use it least than 10 times in 6 months.

join a small independant gym for £25 peak-time which just around the corner from work so there is no excuse of not going anymore.

I haggled and I'm a member of Fitness First (all clubs inc. their platinum and black clubs - Black membership) which I got for £31.

So sounds like room for negotiation particularly in this climate....

Mine is £83, massively discounted from about £120... Virgin active classic.
  • £40 a month at Impulse Leisure. They have a couple of facilties in Essex and london but i use the ones in West Sussex. Very well equipped (well, to me they are) and with the added benefit of free swimming just up the road and various discounts at sports shops and restaurants etc. Pretty decent value to someone who, like me, enjoys getting away from it all by working out.

£120/month? Are there certain private services included in that?

I think they run up to about £80/month up here (Virgin again...), but hard to find anything in town less than £50. Mine is £46, and some of the equipment isn't broken.
  • The other half and I have got Pruhealth health insurance, currently £75 month, but because we're "physically active" the gym membership at canons is free. They're assuming that if you go to the gym and keep fit you won't claim on health insurance.

When we renew in june we'll reset our points to 0 and have to accumalate 3000 points to make our gym memebership free again, it only took 4 months to get that target last year using pedometers, gym visits and their website to read healthy articles. You can even earn points buying Sporting goods on e-bay !

Yup, that's the one. I get in there after 9am.

That's the one I left in a hissy fit after one of their Personal Trainers* decided to push me off the exercise mat so his punter could have 'space to work'. I wouldn't of minded had I not queued for 10 minutes to get a space to stretch out in.

Not that I'm missing it - the showers were frequently cold, the pool closed for repairs, the sauna tepid and the gym equipment worn out. The free weights area is tiny and perma-occupied by grunting monobrows. And the management seem to think it's fine to rent out the majority of lockers and leave only a handful available to those who blithley assume that the use of one was actually part of the membership contract.

The problem is the only competition is Fitness First, who are just as bad. The is a newish outfit down on Lombard Street called Gymbox but I know a handful of people who signed up and left very quickly.

My main objection with gyms is the requirement to join for a year. A friend of mine wants to join a gym nearby, but doesn't want to commit to 12 months given that he could be jobless 3 months from now. Of course the gym won't budge and says he has to sign up for 12 months.

I am like many others - I have my garage kitted out with exercise equipment (weights and punchbag), then do a little running and some cycling too. For some the gym is a good thing, but I definitely prefer my own space and equipment.

I can understand women who worry about ''bingo wings' but c'mon nothing compares to a bike, a pair of running shoes and press / sits at home

There's a gym near a friend's place that is just across the road from a big lake. There's a track round the lake - it's a good couple of miles round.

Lots of people use the track for running and bikiing - getting fresh air and exercise at the same time.

The gym has a window facing the lake. In that window is a line of exercise bikes. And on them are people pedalling away, looking out at what they're missing while breathing other people's air-conditioned, recycled sweat.

    WHY ???

(and they probably drove round for 10 minutes trying to park as close as possible to the gym....)

I joined LA Fitness St. Paul's in London last year, I pay £22 per month. I have no idea how or why it's this cheap, I initially thought this price was weekly when they quoted it! It also included access to all other LA Fitness Gyms except the posh one in Kensington.

Of course soon after I joined my office moved and I don't use it, but at least I'm only paying £22 for a gym I don't use (12 month contract)
