Ive been riding now for about a year on a budget GT outpost with V brakes. It cost me about £220.
I got a cheap one as i wasnt sure if i would use it, or enjoy riding so didnt want to spend too much. Anyway now im doing 2 rides a week, both approx 20 miles a time, both 90% off road.
So do you think now im ready for an upgrade??
Can i warrant it??

Cheers

Only you can decide that. If you feel that you want to go faster, longer or hell, maybe even race in summer, then yes. Get the card out and have something shiny and new.

Do you have a budget in mind? Maybe you could start with a tasty new frame...

It's just when you feel you've 'outgrown' your current bike and components, and possibly, some new ones, would make you faster, ride better, and go further!

Its now im starting to notice things like:

    The shocks are shit
The brakes are really shit etc.

Also the father in law (big MTB fan, super fit, doing the trans rockies) has offered to take me out and then maybe even enter a few races!!!

Was thinking maybe rockhopper. Proven bike, and would suit my needs and budget??

If you need a new bike there's 5 threds a day on what bike to get at all costs

This is how I set my budget - "What bike/gadget/shiny thing must I get at all costs...?"

When the bike falls to bits as your riding it then you should upgrade, until then dont listen to all the magazine/marketing bollox about upgrading just go ride and have fun, You'll no when something needs renewing as it wont work anymore :D

    Yes and yes.

If it's shiny, far too expensive and quite possibly unnecessary, then it's time to upgrade.... :D

I did some thing similar. I bought a Marin which was pretty low end and cost 300 quid. Biggest mistake was getting a V-Brake bike. While the rest of the kit isnt great it doesn't hold back my riding b ut the breaks really aren't powerful enough for some of the stuff I ride. There are some bits of trail centres I ride where I have to break way too early and I'm grabing fist fuls of break which spoils my fun. It is this reason alone that I will have to upgrade.

Lucky for my bank I put my hand through a glass window and have some tendon damage so I can put off my dream bike for weeks/months/ever
