I'm wondering whether to upgrade my crankset, it's 105 compact. I would like a double, but sceptical whether an ultegra or dura ace or whatever would make me faster. 53t would be better than 50 but slight. Your thoughts are appreciated.

Ultegra or Durace will make you poorer, but I doubt faster.

They will be lighter than the equivilant 105, but so will some of the special offer carbon cranksets that have been available recently.

Fit a cassette with an 11 tooth top-sprocket - gives a higher gear than 53x12 and good enough for 60kph plus. Changing components doesn't make you go faster, pedalling harder and more quickly does!
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

Dura Ace must make you faster. Just look at the pros....

Cranksets don't make you faster - but improving your ability to push them round will.
50/11, if you are able to push it, is a little higher than 53-12 and higher than anything that Eddy Merckx used for stage racing - but there are plenty of people on this Forum who swear by such high ratios and are, presumably, faster tha the Great Man.
Given the chaoice, I would rather have the closer intermediate ratios of a 12 0r 13 up cassette rather than a ratio that is only useful down a long, straight traffic free gradient.

I think the only component that'll make you faster are your legs and lungs maybe buy some resistance bands to do lunges for the legs and do all out intervals for the lungs. However I agree on the 11 T sprocket.
