After posting a link to Keith Bontragers version of chamois creme, I decided to mix up a batch myself and give it a try. This is my preliminary report after 2-75 mile rides.
www.cyclingnews.com/riders/2006/diaries ... =keith0606

For-
At least twice the quantity at half the price.
Ingredients are available just about anywhere.
Worked fine for me and my fat *ss.

Against-
You will need a stick to stir it up(not included).
Nowhere near as pretty as Assos white.
Lacks carbon fiber in any form. (I think)
Appears to weight slightly more than top shelf Assos. However, my old scales
from the "dope daze" of the 60's aren't all that reliable anymore.

Note-
Aerodynamic studies are still in progress. Prelim findings indicate no change though.

I forgot to add that the jar of petroleum jelly that I bought came already mixed with Shea
Butter. Whatever that is. My wife said it's "good". The oil of some sort of nut.

Hope the trial goes well Dennis and that you don't suffer from A.R.S.E (Arsehole rejects substitute emollient), during the test phase.

Dennis, on a serious note, how have the shorts washed? Has the petroleum jelly come out ok?

On another serious note, I haven't done my laundry yet. I can report that it seemed
to wash off me with little effort. Gotta do my laundry soon. Running out of underwear
and socks for work. Why do Irish wives make their husbands do their own laundry?
She told me it's a tradition? Am I just a sucker for a redhead?

Dennis, make it easy on yourself and pickup some good old american Bag Balm http://www.bagbalm.com/. Basically the same as the homemade brew, cheap and you can use it on any cows' udders that you may have in your yard. My a** has been chafe free for years. Stray bulls do seem to take an interest as I pedal by though.

To be honest all I did was buy the stuff and my wife, for whatever reason, mixed it up for me. As I recall Bag Balm was THE stuff in the 70's. Then I guess the fancy stuff started coming out and everyone said "gee, that's what I've got to use now, no more of this cow stuff". You're right though. It's still out there.

Laundry done. The jelly coming out doesn't seem to be an issue. The shorts are clean.
I would note, however, that I didn't "shovel" the stuff on quite as thick as his picture showed. Washed in warm water.
