Tyres?

I want to get some new tyres for the summer, mine are wearing thin. Am currently running Panareacer Fire XC PRO 2.1's and they've been pretty good to be honest...figured some slightly fatter tyres will be better for the (hopefully) dry summer.

Anyhow, the general feeling I get are the Maxxis High Rollers are pretty good but I did have Maxxis Ignitor and hated them, wern't anywhere near as good as the Panaracers.

So, any recommendations? I ride mostly round Surrey, Swinley and when I can Wales...fast Single Trail even up to Black trails to be honest. I need a good tyre and boy are there a lot to choose from.

Any help would be good!

Just picked up some speed kings 2.1 foldables last week..After a couple of runs they seem to be pretty good although early days..Roll really fast..very light..saved 100g vs my pana XC pro 1.8's I was running through the winter. If I was buying again think I would go for the 2.3's as they do come up narrow..(look about the same as the panas). Good grip on dry pack and not bad on the loose stuff although if the gravel is deep then a little traction is lost compared with some high rollers I've used. Did find the front seems to be a bit more twitchy but that might be the geometry setup I have being shown up more...Hope this helps..

High rollers are great, my choice for a rear tyre. They are heavy thoguh and only fit the supertacky (they come in different hardnesses) if you know what you want, it is a really draggy compound.

for a lighter alternative, my choice is Schwalbe Nobby nics in whatever width takes your fancy. I run 2.1s front and rear on my SS and a 2.4 on the front of my geared bike with a High Roller out back.

Many folks complain about the sidewalls on NNics and there certainly seems to be evidence that if you're riding muddy enough conditions that the void between tyre and frame is filled with goop, they don't last too long. It's pretty muddy where I live (Belgium) and lots of us run these tyres but noone has had this problem, so it possibly depends on what kind of mud (I know sounds like an excuse for late trains, but there you go) Also, NNics are very sensistve to tyre pressure, probably due to the thin sidewalls. They are light as hell though and grip like buggery

Beer in moderation ... is a waste of beer

If riding an XC race bike is like touching the trail,
then riding a rigid singlespeed is like licking it
... or being punched by it, depending on the day

Panareacer Cinders are a good dry slightly fatter trail centre tyre.. Kenda Nevegal I've been impressed with and are pretty under rated. Maxxis ADvantage or go for a combo Nobly Nick FR and Racing ralph rear..or cinder FR Razr RR.

i'd go for the cinders, they are supposed to be a step up from the fire xc's but having not ridden the fire's i cant compare,
i love the cinders though, great allround grip and fast rolling!

  • Thanks a lot guys, good info so far...The Cinders sound good, and are on sale on CR!! Gonna read up some reviews of the others and check out EBay!!
  • ...also, why do a lot of people prefer the folding? Is it just because you can carry a spare or for other reasons? Surely the Wire Beads are stronger? Ta!

Plus folders are often made better/using better materials, the wire bead OEM spec nevegals frinstance have way less grip than the folders.

Lots of good tyres out there... I just started using Kenda Small Blocks, they're pretty cool, fast and immensely grippy but not race-tyre fragile.

    +1 for Cinders.

I have been using them for about 4 months and normally ride at Coed Y Brenin. They are fairly fast rolling and offer good grip in all conditions. They are lasting really well and are as tough as old boots (no punctures so far, I will probably get one tonight now! )

Yeah, If I didn't want slightly fatter tyres I would have...only problem is the Fire XC Pro only come in 2.1. I'm now debating either the Cinders or the FireFR...if I get the wire ones I can get em cheap on CRC. So, yeah...sticking with what I know (kinda!).

I really don't think the weight is an issue with me.
