Between 5 - 6pm heading towards the Sheen gate and out of the park was that you Jonginge giving the imperceptible nod to the black guy on a Kharma with white race cape?
Anywho I finally took the Kharma around Richmond park, this being my second time around the park on a bike. I went clockwise (coffee shop to the left) and into the headwind! I figured I'd get proper man points as it seemed that I was the only person going in that direction and everyone else (including a guy on a lovely Condor bike) heading in the other.

I finally overcame my demons and got up that hill (Google is telling me its Sawyers hill) without having to get off the bike (though i did get down into the small ring). I overtook a couple of people which I was impressed with.

Bring on the 18th.

Clockwise looks like not a lot of fun to me. I went round there the other day anti clockwise and that swoopy fast descent is awesome fun, but I would NOT want to ride back up it!

no sawyers hill is the long drag up to richmond gate the two steeper bits are broom hill towards kingston (running paralle with A3) and then down dark hill the 2nd steep hill in RP, broom hill is a bit of false start so can catch people out.

Good effort DDD, bonus points for going clockwise which is generally harder work, especially into a headwind. Now you just need to get a 3-lap time on the board! I'm heading down there tomorrow night around 6.30pm - will keep an eye out for you and Karen.

I may try anti-clockwise today after work or on the weekend.

What I don't want is the easy option.

Going clock-wise, for me, there is only one hill worth merit The first hill you come to after the coffee-shop. I used to think that was dark hill.

Thanks, I do need to get a three lap time!

I also rode up Wimbledon Hill, I quite like hill climbing on the Kharma , gives a sense of achievement.

I much prefer Anti. It makes navigating the roundabouts much easier - its really annoying having to unclip etc. RP is great but does get boring on your 5th lap, I tell thee! I got to the point on sunday that I was seriously considering whether one could shoot a deer from a bike. :?

Yep it's amazing what goes through your mind after a few rather repetative laps... I drafted an essay on free will and determinism over the weekend.

@ DDD, Going clockwise from Roehampton gate you should go up broomfield hill, down dark hill, along to richmond gate and then down sawyers hill.

:D I believe there was also an imperceptible hand raise ;) I did wonder whether it was you but dismissed it as it was a bit early and you were approaching from sheen gate. I was a bit tired from the 6 laps I'd just done which meant I didn't spot the kuota :( I can tell you anticlockwise was also hard work: cross/headwind up sawyers and headwind between richmond and kingston. Looks the same today :x

3 or 4 laps max for me before ennui kicks in. A Surrey Hills jaunt is much more fun.

I know what you mean but when you've only got a couple of hours the 30mins to clear the burbs seems a lot of effort ;) Also, at only a mile away for me, it's the easy option.

I need to move nearer RP. 1 lap for me involves an hour by the time i've got there and back. Surrey hills even more so, grrrr.

@DDD - now come to Wales on the 21-25 August and we'll do some proper (for the UK) climbing. Also you must come on a Surrey hills juant at some stage. If you don't want to trek out of London you can always whack the bike on the train and get off at Boxhill.

Why don't you come along to one of the rides (I think this week Sunday some of us are heading over to Richmond Park). No pressure on speed or performance. Or if that is a little overwhelming, if you haven't already, why not meet us at the Morpeth for a drink or two to get a feel of how well we all ride.

But most importantly, just take the plunge.

Come join us in the south west. You know it makes sense. 8) Your cycling will improve no end. Compare your one hour of riding to mine (three laps of RP).

I really must make time to come along for a Surrey Hills ride! I think I'm starting to find my climbing legs and a technique that suits me so would love to try some proper hills!

@DDD - Excellent effort there, sounds like you did it the MTFU way last night! In regards to the climbing I'm guessing I can only liken your experience with climbing on the Kharma to when I changed from my original roadie to the Giant, it just seemed so much more effortless up the hills! Now you need to ride back to the legendary 17% hill and show that some DDD power ;-)

@Jash, I'm a honest maybe for the 21 - 25 August, my attendance all depends on money and the to be arranged holiday with my GF. Gotta give me a few months to up the long distance muscles to ride with you all on the Surrey hills ride.

@Bass, thanks. I have to say that while the SCR is not a bad bike the gulf in quality between it and the Kharma is huge. I love the stiffness of the bottom bracket and head tube on the Kharma.

But the ride characteristics are different. The Kharma is also a medium  53cm frame, the Giant is a large and at 5'10'' I'm between sizes. Both are comfortable in different ways needing the usual tweaks. The size difference in frames means the Kharma is proper stiff, lively and hard to ride slowly whereas the Giant is flexy, comfortable for a pootle but strenuous when trying to ride fast for long.

Good good. 7 peeps confirmed now, so if you come it'll be £100 per person! As for needing to up the long distance muscles, well the only way to do that is to ride long distances (it's about stamina over muscle really) - so come on out whenever you fancy. Same to you Bass. In fact I'm heading out Bank Holiday Monday if you fancy? It'll be a gentle ride as I've not been feeling 100% since last week, but it's my last chance to stretch the legs before a week on the beach in Turkey!

    Let me know. :D
