Most widely used pedal in the pro peloton?

A bloke I know is making the (frankly ludicrous) claim that eggbeaters are the most widely used pedal in the pro peloton. I'm pretty certain that's not true, but what are the most widely used pedals in the peloton?

Probably Look or Shimano. (Keo or Dura Ace). Depends on who sponsors your team.

By eggbeaters - perhaps he meant Speedplay? They can look a LITTLE like eggbeaters. Eggbeaters are more MTN pedals - no?

Exactly, but he really means eggbeaters! He swears that they're one of, if not the, most used pedal in the pro peloton, but I keep telling him he's mental.

He's full of it. Eggbeaters are mountain bike pedals. Which require mountain bike shoes. Do you see any pro riders wearing mountain bike shoes!?

    Nope.

    He's just winding you up.

Several pros do use the Crank Brothers Quattor pedal, which is an Eggbeater with an external platform. I think Cadel Evans used to used them.

I doubt that its the dominant pedal, though.

They don't actually make them any more.

    Guess they weren't that successful.
  • Definitely not a wind up, he even rides eggbeaters on the track! He does this even though everyone tells him that he's a) not transferring the amounts of power he would with a pedal with a decent platform, and b) in danger of clipping out because eggbeaters aren't tight and are more prone to failure than other systems. He's full of shite, but he's so stubborn that he does my head in!

It's a little like wrestling a gorilla. You don't quit when you're tired. You quit when the gorilla is tired.

Lotto (or selected riders) did used to use them ... Freddy Rodriguez used to deffo use them and there were special Lotto editions made ...

i (and my gf) have them on our road bikes and they work very well, decent purchase due to the platform ... not as secure as Looks but easier to use (esp. for the gf) ... a good upgrade from spd's if you don't want pure 'road' pedals ... i honestly just bought them so i would have something 'different' on my bike ... and the colour/design matched my frame ...

oh, and it's the same system as egg beaters so your road cleat would work on those if you had them .. just no platfrom/housing ... i have the mtb version on my badboy and can use my road shoes with them (or vica versa)

EDIT - just noticed they no longer have them on their website ... they did 6 months ago ... will now need to source new cleats and possibly spare pedals ... grrr

You'll have to trawl the i-net looking for them. Some places may only have the (expensive)Ti versions left. Great pedals, esp. on a fixie or a commute bike.

Actually, the fashion now in some circles is to have the most garish thing. Someone I know who rides for Felt has pink Bont shoes, speedplays and a pink/white Arione saddle. Black is sooo yesterday, dahlings!

Your mate IS mental. If he actually watched road racing, he'd see that Shimano DX pedals are the weapon of choice ;-)

There is that Giro centennial edition Cervelo which looks good and didn't Pantani have a pink Bianchi? Not those pink Mercatone Uno shorts tho

Jan looked good in T-Mobile pink and in full TT mode

Biggest pile of poo to put on my bike.

Last week the whole pedal came away from the axel. Not funny.

Up until then I had enjoyed using them. Now gone to Speedplay which came very highly recommend by Magnus Bakstead(?) at last years bike show.

Even Alberto rode a pink Trek at the Giro last year! :)

Ha! No, but he's on another message board and I find it (disproportionately) annoying and irresponsible when he tells other people they could/should ride eggbeaters in road and track racing. Plus, I just don't like the bloke! :)

    Thanks for the answers, everyone.

I had those Quattro Pros on my road bike until a couple of weeks ago. Unfortunately the tension seems to have worn off the spring so I lost confidence in them. There were a good option for me at the time though as I was using my road bike to commute to work on and having double sided pedals is a good thing when you have to clip in and out a lot.

They lasted about 2 years of very heavy use so not too bad.

I've now got a pair of Keos on my bike.
